Male dolphins will drown swimmers by accident, as they are trying to essentially rape them.

The story of Cortez going into Mexico and defeating the entire Aztec empire with just a tiny army of Spaniards is a myth. The truth of the matter is, he was able to defeat the Aztec empire because he had gathered an army of over ten thousand men and women from neighboring, Totonac and Tlaxcaltec empires that hated the brutal, domineering Aztecs. (It was one of those the enemy of my enemy is my friend type deals.)

The reason why this myth came about is that the Spanish wanted to pump up their legend and since they won, you know what they say about conquerors writing history...

Napoleon was of average height for a man at the time, and Robespierre was actually shorter than him (5"2').

During the Crusades, there were rampant food shortages everywhere that led to tragic famines. Some knights who traveled across Europe to get to the Holyland were known to cross some villages and...well, partake in the local cuisine of long pig. Basically, they slaughtered the villagers and ate them. However, in other cases, some knights have been recorded into going into certain villages never coming back out having been turned into delivery meals. The villagers ate the knights.

It wasn't called The Dark Ages for nothing.

What we think of as traditional African prints in things like kente cloth, (bold colors and large designs) actually has it's roots not in Africa but in Europe and India under the name Dutch Wax Prints.

The angler fish you see with huge scary soul-devouring teeth? Those are all females. Male angler fish are tiny and pathetic and their only purpose in life is to find a female and latch onto her. The two fish then fuse into one, with the male becoming a parasitic lump living off the female's blood supply and fertilising her eggs.

hyenas give birth through their clitoris (their birth canal is located there). giving birth for the first time is so painful for them that it can take weeks to recover fully. it's not entirely uncommon for them to die during the birthing process

Crows are some of the few animals who can not only use tools for getting food but also use tools as toys just for fun.

They can also communicate on a pretty complex level and can remember things like human faces over a long time.

There's a dog named Guinefort from the 1200s that was revered as a saint by the local Catholics of his time. The Church tried to put a stop to it since animals aren't supposed to have souls/be saints, but the people continued to pray to the dead dog anyway because praying to a dog saint is badass.

Saint Guinefort remains a cult figure to this day and even has an unofficial feast day on August 22.
