Unless that agnostic pretends that atheists claim to have certain knowledge that gods don't exist, in which case they are no longer honest. Most atheists are also agnostic.

Well, at this point we should probably stop and sort out exactly how we're defining our terms.

To me, if you firmly believe that there is no God and act as though your belief gives this proposition the weight of fact, and anyone who believes in a God or isn't sure is a dumbass for not agreeing with you, you're an atheist. If you tend not to think that there's a God but acknowledge that it's just your opinion and you could be wrong, you're agnostic with atheistic leanings. If you refuse to commit to an opinion one way or the other, you're just agnostic.

If you disagree with me, fine, disagree with me. Correct me. Cite a source you consider definitive. If all you're interested in doing is hanging around sneering about how sophisticated you and and I'm not (or that perennial favorite, how it's 'not your job to educate me,') then go jump in a lake. Your thoughtful commentary might be worth my time but your snobbery definitely isn't.

But no, it's not my job to educate you. It is my job to mock the ignorant and bigoted, especially when they try to make definitive statements about groups they're not a part of.

BTW, you can buy the horse for life by just reading a handfull of paragraphs from the first hit on a google search, or by exercising the common sense of not daring to define groups you don't consider yourself a member of.

Okay, definitions. Atheism is the position of lacking a belief that any gods exist. Agnosticism is the belief that certain knowledge of whether or not any gods exist is impossible to obtain. These positions are compatible. Note that I did not make up these definitions; if I were not on my phone, I would provide you Wikipedia links.

Fair enough, I stand corrected and I thank you for your civility.

I would like to know, though: is there a formal term for the certitude, absent any proof (which cannot be obtained, as has been noted elsewhere) that no God exists? Because I run across it all the time from people who call themselves atheists, so if that isn't the right word, what is?

People who claim to be certain that no gods exist belong to a sub-category of atheists called "strong atheists." People who simply lack belief are called "weak atheists."

da, we call that gnostic atheism. But I do doubt you're meeting THAT many gnostic atheists (I've literally only met one, and I've hung around lots of atheist communities), but rather agnostic atheists who go with the notion of "absent of any evidence, I'll go on living my life as though this thing doesn't exist". That's still Agnostic atheism, because it's still open to evidence changing their views, and it's still acknowledging that it's not provable/disprovable so far as we know. It looks a lot like gnosticism, but it's more of a probability thing. These agnostic atheists are just doubtful that evidence will ever come on the subject of gods.

Not to demean anyone's beliefs, but as a very simplistic analogy, it's like unicorns. There's no evidence of them in the world, never has been. It's reasonable to live your life under the assumption that unicorns don't exist. But as an agnostic, you're not capable of asserting with 100% certainty that they're not real; just... very likely made up by humans, if you look at history. And so if evidence were to pop up to show that unicorns were real, the agnostic atheists towards unicorns would switch their positions. It's just not unreasonable to say that, until that evidence comes to say otherwise, they're highly doubtful towards the existence of unicorns.

Even Richard Dawkins is an agnostic atheist. It's... pretty rare to find atheists who assert they KNOW there is no god. The only famous one I know of is Penn Jillette.
