As a fan of world-building, I have a difficult time understanding why people insist on being lazy about it anyway.

Even world-building can be practiced in fanfic, if you're in a fandom which has less than comprehensive background details (prime example: Harry Potter). All you need is to turn that around to use on a world you've invented yourself.

But true, I can't imagine my current favourite author turning her fic that I love so much into original fiction because it hinges so heavily on the world it is set in. I can however imagine her using the world-building skills she has practiced in that fic should she ever decide to write original fiction.
