I love fanfiction, but I really think it should just stay fanfiction. I think publishing it (without MASSIVE edits) makes it awful because you lose a lot of the world building that is created by the original show/book/movie.

Exactly this. If you do the massive edits to where they're original characters and it's no longer recognizable as based on the source material, then fine.

As a fan of world-building, I have a difficult time understanding why people insist on being lazy about it anyway.

Even world-building can be practiced in fanfic, if you're in a fandom which has less than comprehensive background details (prime example: Harry Potter). All you need is to turn that around to use on a world you've invented yourself.

But true, I can't imagine my current favourite author turning her fic that I love so much into original fiction because it hinges so heavily on the world it is set in. I can however imagine her using the world-building skills she has practiced in that fic should she ever decide to write original fiction.

Sometimes I read fanfic that is so OOC and AU and I think that's the only occasion it could be published. It's at that point it's basically original fiction anyways, but it's using an existing fandom to get an audience. Otherwise... yep, just keep ti online.

Yeah - I've always felt like it's just fine to let what you want to publish for a paid occupation be informed and inspired by other people's characters - clearly Rowling took from a number of sources, for example - but you have to be able to distill that into a healthy dose of you bringing originality into the telling of a story. Which she also did.

Which is to say, if you want to modify Vampire Edward into your own character creation, that's fine, but (1) don't make the guy LESS likable than Edward, and (2) LEARN TO FUCKING WRITE WELL. My chief bitch with the little bit I read of 50 Shades was that it was just NOT compelling at all. All the people who've snapped it up could have saved a ton of money and found better in the AO3 archives (and in some instances, in The Pit).

(The only good thing I can see that came out of 50 Shades was that Random was able to give all its employees big bonuses last Christmas. Which, that's sort of impossible to criticize.)
