Even world-building can be practiced in fanfic, if you're in a fandom which has less than comprehensive background details (prime example: Harry Potter). All you need is to turn that around to use on a world you've invented yourself.
But true, I can't imagine my current favourite author turning her fic that I love so much into original fiction because it hinges so heavily on the world it is set in. I can however imagine her using the world-building skills she has practiced in that fic should she ever decide to write original fiction.

Which is to say, if you want to modify Vampire Edward into your own character creation, that's fine, but (1) don't make the guy LESS likable than Edward, and (2) LEARN TO FUCKING WRITE WELL. My chief bitch with the little bit I read of 50 Shades was that it was just NOT compelling at all. All the people who've snapped it up could have saved a ton of money and found better in the AO3 archives (and in some instances, in The Pit).
(The only good thing I can see that came out of 50 Shades was that Random was able to give all its employees big bonuses last Christmas. Which, that's sort of impossible to criticize.)
