Yeah - I've always felt like it's just fine to let what you want to publish for a paid occupation be informed and inspired by other people's characters - clearly Rowling took from a number of sources, for example - but you have to be able to distill that into a healthy dose of you bringing originality into the telling of a story. Which she also did.

Which is to say, if you want to modify Vampire Edward into your own character creation, that's fine, but (1) don't make the guy LESS likable than Edward, and (2) LEARN TO FUCKING WRITE WELL. My chief bitch with the little bit I read of 50 Shades was that it was just NOT compelling at all. All the people who've snapped it up could have saved a ton of money and found better in the AO3 archives (and in some instances, in The Pit).

(The only good thing I can see that came out of 50 Shades was that Random was able to give all its employees big bonuses last Christmas. Which, that's sort of impossible to criticize.)
