The next film is likely to be the last one in any case. But if it truly bombed (which I don't think it will, as they'll probably just do the same thing for the third time straight) it would be the end of Trek for the foreseeable future. Like it or not, the Reboot's success is how we're going to get more Trek in some form.

Then trek can die.

I've been playing devil's advocate above, but the reboot isn't all that great. I'll let what I love die while there's still good memories rather then go with "maybe if we support this suck we'll get something better AND NOT MORE SUCK"

I just don't hate Pegg for it.

And people seem to be looking at the history of cinematic Trek through rose-colored glasses. Khan and Search are probably the two stand-outs. Before that was Roddenberry trying to do Tarkovsky and Kubrick (a magnificent failure but still a failure), and after that you had a declining franchise built around maximum fan service.
