Well yes of course he's going to defend the film that he worked on and the franchise that gives him a regular(ish) paycheck, he'd be silly to utterly trounce it.

Personally I enjoyed ST:ID until about halfway through(I still think that the first half is a fun sci-fi action romp in space) but it lost me at the Khan reveal and even more so at flipping the roles between Kirk and Spock at the end, I don't think it's THE WORST(tm) but I was a little disappointed by the end.
