that sounds about right, you're being absorbed by fandom properly.

Sorry OP, welcome to the hive mind

I went through a phase a few years back similar to your 'Year 4'; I barely batted an eye at anything. However, I took some time out of fandom and came back and now wouldn't go near half the stuff I read back then.
I think for me there was a really intense 'exploration' phase of stuff I'd never even heard of before fandom. Once you've absorbed so much it's possible you'll just settle back to a place you're comfortable with. Becoming desensitised isn't inevitable.

Not necessarily. I have been reading fanfics for ohhhhhh 10 years. I started out JUST like you (I was all about Bulma/Vegeta). And ended up mostly where you are at (different kinks for the most part), but I still have hard limits (underage, BDSM, scat, etc) that I doubt I will ever cross.

Furniture fucking?

If this is a milemarker then I seem to have been stuck in Year 3 for the last 10 years or so.

egg-laying...

furniture-fucking

For some reason that made me laugh uncontrollably.

I don't know. I've been in fandom for like 12 years and there are still things that squick me if written a certain way. And, I'm waaaaay pickier as to what fics I'll read than I was in the beginning.

No matter how depraved you think you are, there is always someone out there more disturbing.

Give it time. I've already accepted and embraced the first, and have become desensitized to the latter two. Actually I've become desensitized to pretty much everything in fictional media, I think I'm down to one thing that still turns my stomach. Everything else is either a kink or "meh" at the point.

Count me as another who has been reading fanfic for forever (my first were X-Files ones on newsgroups; I am ancient) and while I've become a lot more open in what I will read, I still have some hard and fast lines that I will not cross.

Year Six: the fandom accepts you as one of their own. You know their ways, their habits. You consider yourself one of them and will not complete your mission. However, those who sent you will never give up. Another will come...and you will be ready.

Also, thanks for 'furniture fucking.' Now I have a mental image of my end tables in a threesome with my coffee table.

It's kay nonny.

I underwent the entire transition in about six months when I was like thirteen, and look at the well adjusted member of society I turned out to be. You'll be fine.

Original male dog
Benchmark of quality writing right there (not to be mistaken for any of those canon dogs, I'm sure).

This is honestly why I stopped with SPN. I avoid any fic like the plague nowadays, even if it comes highly recced from my favorite reccers. Stay far farrrrr away.

[Picture is closeups of the faces of Dean and Sam Winchester from the TV show "Supernatural". They look serious.]

Year 1 in Fandom: NO HOMO(sexuality), What The Fuck is FANFIC? How dare they?!
Year 2: Fanfic...okay. Ho...okay.
Year 3: HO(mosexuality) YAY! (stopped caring about Out of Character)
Year 4: Will read almost anything: incest, water sports, alpha/omega, sub/dom, original male dog, werewolf, egg-laying, mpreg, furniture-fucking, slavery, shock therapy. Bring it. (Just spell check, please.)
Year 5: I'm scared of becoming immune to vore/gore, scat and pedo, but I can see it coming.

I went to a very dark place fandom wise three years ago and had to stop reading all but a select few authors because it was affecting my RL. I don't miss it.

I remember when I used to be so easily shocked by things that I saw on the internet and in fandom, there are still things I don't read but seeing them barely phases me now.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-05 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
I kind of went the opposite way, funnily enough. I used to read a LOT of non-con, but now that I'm older it seems less believable, and I go more for exploration of feelings and misunderstandings, stuff like that.

Like other people here have said, sometimes you end up going back around. Some years ago I was reading all kinds of super-kinky shit like it was nothing (though I did and still do draw the line at scat and watersports), until finally I burned myself out on kink entirely when I was in the Inception fandom, and now I crave mostly only vanilla stuff. I look back on what I used to spend hours reading and I wonder what the fuck, I couldn't do that now.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-05 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
You don't have to read extreme/creepy stuff if you don't want to, you know? Unless you feel you can't *stop* reading and have to keep escalating the content to get a reaction - in which case maybe you should talk to someone about this.

Yeah, this is me too. The only things I won't read are scat, watersports and vore. And underage, like 13 or under (the age of consent where I live is 16).
