I tried dialogue like this in my first few fanfics, and I just couldn't do it so I always chickened out and went with "he moaned erotically". Which isn't much better. How do I sexy.

This is where I have problems. Because aurally, I find sounds like that quite pleasing and can't stand regular talking, let alone dirty talk. But it totally doesn't translate to the written word. Which makes an already difficult thing to write even...harder. And finding sexy-to-me stories to read ain't all that easy either.

Writing out sounds with random combinations of letters never ends well.

depends on who's involved i guess. i find this hotter than people having a conversation during sex though.

Ijust makes me think of the way J.Lo laughs in The True Meaning of Smekday.

Ahahahaha... Same, OP. I kinda wince because it seems like the author's not aware that some things are better left up to the imagination and sex noises are high on that list.

Yep. A few days ago I read some fics on AO3 for less frequently written Marvel characters (comics) and unfortunately they were full of that. Doesn't bother nearly as much for big pairings cause then I just skip and move on.

I strongly agree. When writing sex scenes, writers should just use "He/She moaned", or "He/She made a soft sound..." et cetera. I frequently see people writing-out this "Hnnnnggggaaahhh" stuff and it is cheesy and off-putting.

Someone's been reading too much yaoi manga/doujinshi. I don't think people understand that comic sound effects don't really translate over to fanfiction.

That sort of thing is standard in Japanese fanfic and pro-fic. But I agree it doesn't really work the same in English.

This makes me think of the book The Corset Diaries; there's a scene where the main guy is getting sexed up and he's mid sentence when he goes something like, "Hngggrrrwaaa..." The main female character threw him right off his game at that point, and it wasn't awkward or weird, but funny as fark. Actually doing this to someone and making them lose all grasp on how to speak is downright AWESOME. I never liked the useage of "mmm" and "Umm" and such because it sounds less sexy and more like they forgot what they wanted to say... but when it's done for laughs, it's GREAT.
