Not every woman who likes male slash is straight, and not every woman who likes femslash isn't straight. Sometimes it has to do with the actual characters or artist/author. Sometimes what people find hot in fiction doesn't line up with what they want to do in reality. Sometimes people like the art or stories without being at all turned on!

For awhile on tumblr, their genderbends were more common, proving people can be pretty shallow in this regard.

Not disputing any of this at all, but to add to it - there is a very strong tie between femslash and lesbian culture in a way that is quite distinct from fandom in general. There's long been a way bigger overlap between our 'mainstream' and 'fandom' media. (Primarily cause there's fuck all of the former that's any good without requiring tonnes of communaln re-interpretative work anyway.)

Yeah... Like, many of the really HUGE femslash fandoms form around things that have canon lesbians (Buffy, Sailor Moon, Skins) or not-stated-but-essentially-canon lesbians (Xena, Final Fantasy XIII). Whereas canon m/m pairings get fandoms, but not markedly more so than non-canon ones.

+1, I'm a queer woman and I find myself feeling really self-conscious when I read stories about other queer women. I like being represented, but I'm a lot more likely to read stuff about dudes myself. I know I'm not alone, either.

Yeah, I'm a lesbian who loves the fuck out of yaoi! Yuri is okay, but reading it is usually (but not always) less sexy for some reason. I think I just am not interested in heterosexual stuff, only gay stuff.
