Rating it adults only/explicit, then there's next to no porn or violence. Why is it rated so high if there's nothing worthy of the rating?! WHERE IS MY PORN

YES! Especially Explicit. Mature is sort of a "Will there be porn or won't there be???" But explicit. There. Better. Be. Porn. I did not read a 50,000 word Explicit Johnlock fic just for you to fade into the next morning right before they start going at it. STOP GIVING ME BLUE BALLS FIC WRITERS!

Depends on the comm/site's rating rules. I have a fic that's M on AO3, R in the original comm I posted it on, FR-15 in another comm, and M on ff.net. I've gotten hatemail on ff.net for posting an M rated fic that didn't have any explicit scenes in it, but that's the appropriate rating for it using The Pit's guidelines.

This is when people should use author's notes, as a courtesy to their readers. I have one fic that contains just a single brief scene with sexual content (masturbation), but it's too explicit for a "Mature" rating, so I put an author's note at the beginning to inform readers that it wasn't going to have scads of porn, because I didn't want to disappoint people. I don't see why more fic authors can't do likewise -- unless the problem is that they actually fail to understand what the Explicit rating means.
