Find a Renaissance Faire, if you have them in your area. You'll be able to try it on and be sized by experts who know what they're doing, and the quality is usually pretty good.

As far as cost, it depends. If you're looking for a sturdy garment that will give you real support, especially if you're not tiny, then yes, it's going to be pricy. If you just need a costume piece that doesn't need to meaningfully hold anything up or in, then you can probably get away with cheaper.

Seconding the Ren Faire, it's where I got mine. They were very helpful about it.

It also depends on what kind of corset you're looking for. An overbust is obviously more expensive than an underbust. Depending on what you're looking for, you might want to start with an underbust to see how you like it.
