Discussion of flaws, eh? You got it.

I can barely tell the factions apart either. Not to mention the faction names are so goddamn convoluted and hard to read that they're really hard to even remember, much less their general theme and role in the story. They try to make a distinction between VEL'Sharen and VAL'Sharen for fuck's sake. If you must have a million factions, make them easy to remember.

Honestly, the biggest flaw for me is the art. Now, it's pretty and full of detail, and for a static image it looks fine. Mostly. All the characters still have the exact same face and sometimes faces are drawn pretty badly, but it's servicable.

But the comic is full of action and my god, the characters could not look any more stiff and wooden if they were posable action figures. There's no sense of motion or flow between panels, and none of the dramatic fighting scenes have any weight. There's a lot of drama and horror going on in this story and the art cannot convey it properly to save its life, and that's a damn shame when there's so much cool fighting going on.

Not to mention that the panels and speech bubbles are a mess. If you need to color-code speech bubbles so you can tell who the hell is talking, you have serious layout problems. There's some pages where there's a dozen panels crammed together that you have no idea what order you're supposed to read them, and who's talking in what order, and some bubble tags stretched waaaay across the panel.

Honestly, I think thse guys need to read up on how to draw comics. They seem to think that if you can draw a static image then you have all the skills you need, but you don't. I would much rather have a comic that's not as prettily covered if they can add some LIFE to the people in it.

TL;DR - Good art doesn't make a good comic if don't know how to draw comics.

AYRT here! Thank you for this! :3c

And you have a huge point about how while the art is pretty nice (though just having read through some of the newest stuff, the anatomy of characters at times is rather spotty, and sometimes scale goes out the window... thinking about it, I don't think the character art has actually improved much at all since the reboot. It just adopted a prettier coloring style? Though even with that it seems to oscillate between having gorgeous backgrounds and having backgrounds that just look really lazy... This is way too long of an aside, I BLAME IT BEING 5AM.) that there are a lot of problems with it as a comic.

I mean compared to something like Unsounded, which is practically perfect when it comes to being a comic, it's just like... geez. And not something that I've noticed any improvement for, either.

Comparing it to Unsounded, though, that reminds me though. During my quick catch-up tonight, I noticed this page: http://www.drowtales.com/mainarchive.php?sid=9567 where they do a page-breaking layout. Which is visually interesting and all but... also incredibly pointless? Like. Why are you breaking page for this particular owl which doesn't seem to have any importance to the story or the page or anything? Now, Unsounded also has its moments of breaking page (and beyond) but it generally does it for impact and emphasis of what's occurring on the page, especially when magic is involved (examples: http://www.casualvillain.com/Unsounded/comic/ch03/ch03_46.html and http://www.casualvillain.com/Unsounded/comic/ch04/ch04_73.html and http://www.casualvillain.com/Unsounded/comic/ch05/ch05_18.html and http://www.casualvillain.com/Unsounded/comic/ch05/ch05_30.html and and <3). I guess it follows the old wisdom of how you need to know and understand the rules before you can break them.

(I have a huge artist crush on Unsounded, okay? I swear it's one of the most perfectly constructed webcomics out there, and just like the sequence that starts on this page (warning: gore) http://www.casualvillain.com/Unsounded/comic/ch07/ch07_28.html is just so amazing and makes the greatest use out of its format as a webcomic and just. woghwoghwog. It's late, I should ramble less and sleep more.)
