Re: Discussion of flaws, eh? You got it.
(Anonymous) 2013-09-06 08:34 am (UTC)(link)And you have a huge point about how while the art is pretty nice (though just having read through some of the newest stuff, the anatomy of characters at times is rather spotty, and sometimes scale goes out the window... thinking about it, I don't think the character art has actually improved much at all since the reboot. It just adopted a prettier coloring style? Though even with that it seems to oscillate between having gorgeous backgrounds and having backgrounds that just look really lazy... This is way too long of an aside, I BLAME IT BEING 5AM.) that there are a lot of problems with it as a comic.
I mean compared to something like Unsounded, which is practically perfect when it comes to being a comic, it's just like... geez. And not something that I've noticed any improvement for, either.
Comparing it to Unsounded, though, that reminds me though. During my quick catch-up tonight, I noticed this page: http://www.drowtales.com/mainarchive.php?sid=9567 where they do a page-breaking layout. Which is visually interesting and all but... also incredibly pointless? Like. Why are you breaking page for this particular owl which doesn't seem to have any importance to the story or the page or anything? Now, Unsounded also has its moments of breaking page (and beyond) but it generally does it for impact and emphasis of what's occurring on the page, especially when magic is involved (examples: http://www.casualvillain.com/Unsounded/comic/ch03/ch03_46.html and http://www.casualvillain.com/Unsounded/comic/ch04/ch04_73.html and http://www.casualvillain.com/Unsounded/comic/ch05/ch05_18.html and http://www.casualvillain.com/Unsounded/comic/ch05/ch05_30.html and and <3). I guess it follows the old wisdom of how you need to know and understand the rules before you can break them.
(I have a huge artist crush on Unsounded, okay? I swear it's one of the most perfectly constructed webcomics out there, and just like the sequence that starts on this page (warning: gore) http://www.casualvillain.com/Unsounded/comic/ch07/ch07_28.html is just so amazing and makes the greatest use out of its format as a webcomic and just. woghwoghwog. It's late, I should ramble less and sleep more.)
