It probably depends on what fandom you're in. There can be a lot of shallowness, yes, but in the last fandom I was in, analysis and meta could bag hundreds of notes. And this was on tumblr. It was a moderately sized fandom though. I feel like the bigger a fandom is, the more intelligent discussion gets lost in a sea of screaming fangirls only in for the eye candy.
