Re: Good god, enjoy the meta while you can!

Isn't that the case with all fandoms now? Anytime I post an image on Tumblr, it reaches a hundred reblogs in no time. Post a text longer than one sentence and ... a couple of people show token interest. Usually no one reblogs with a reply.

I mean, say the fandom is a TV show - if you just post images and quotes from it, you're basically just repeating little pieces of the original with no added value. Why do people care so much about seeing the same gif over and over again? I fear for humanity.

Oddly, I think I managed to kind of be "that one meta guy" in my fandom - I don't think I'm terribly well-known, though. And I've definitely pissed several people off by questioning the fandom's mindless acceptance of certain things.

But yeah, my most popular meta post has ~120 notes, last I checked. Granted, it's a slow accumulation, but there are people on tumblr who like and appreciate a good analysis. (Especially if it doesn't criticize their favorite character/pairing - I think I managed to acquire a pet hater who leaves trite, empty insults anonymously in my askbox every time I dare speak ill of the fandom's precious babies.)

I'd take an anon hater anytime if it meant that I would also get actual reactions from people besides a like or a short acknowledgement ("Oh, interesting" or "This is why I like this character" or "OTP forever").

It probably depends on what fandom you're in. There can be a lot of shallowness, yes, but in the last fandom I was in, analysis and meta could bag hundreds of notes. And this was on tumblr. It was a moderately sized fandom though. I feel like the bigger a fandom is, the more intelligent discussion gets lost in a sea of screaming fangirls only in for the eye candy.
