Well if you think about it, there's pretty good reason somebody would keep something offensive like that a secret. Possibly even because it's offensive.

Compare that to something demanding that Batman be a POC woman in the new movies because white cishet male scum et cetera, and I'd say there's a difference.

Contrary to popular belief, I'm not here to police what opinions are appropriate to have! Only to do my best at guessing at which secrets could possibly be legitimate and to stop wank if it gets out of hand (wank that I generally don't take sides in, for the similar reasons).

It's not so much the opinion that people are objecting to, but rather the slur used to express the opinion. I think that's kind of a legit objection; is there a formal policy on the use of slurs in secrets?

No, there isn't. I don't think I can do that without wading into what is/is not appropriate and what does/does not offend people, and I'd rather not get into that huge conversation.

Just because I post something doesn't mean I approve of it, of course, and it never meant that. I'm not sure why this is suddenly being assumed to be true as of now. Take it out on the OP if you like!

I find it more than disappointing that you seem to consider it, essentially, too much work or too controversial to ensure that fandomsecrets is a safe space for trans* fen.

Of course you are not, nor should you be, held accountable for any poster's secret; nor do I think that you automatically hold the same views as shown in any individual secret - to think either of those things would be ridiculous.

That being said, for you as the moderator of the fandomsecrets community to say that you have no obligation to ensure that offensively worded and potentially triggery secrets are, if not excluded from the main post along with the not!secret and not!fandom entries then at the least placed under the trigger warning heading is specious at best. There are a number of offensive terms and insults - including the one used in the secret in question - which are clearly hurtful not only to individuals but to entire communities and which could easily be identified and dealt with as such without having involved philosophical discussions on relative propriety.

Surely the right of any anon poster to be transphobic in a public space should never trump the right of a trans* individual to feel safe in that space.

It's not really about the work. It's about what a secret community is based on: secrets. Not every secret is able to be shared in a safe space. Given that, FS is not and cannot be a completely safe space without tossing out the whole point. Some people's secrets are going to offend others and some people hold opinions that might be offensive to others - that's sort of a given, and a lot of the reason people keep those things secret in the first place.

It's not like the message couldn't have been expressed without using the slur. They thought a female video game character looked like a transsexual? They could say THAT, transwoman, or just trans, and it wouldn't be offensive. The slur was not necessary.

Likewise ableist slurs. I've seen "retarded" or "retard" often enough. I don't like it, or slurs of any kind, but I think the idea that FS should be a safe space is fundamentally flawed. And I can always exercise my option to call the OP a prejudiced jerk in the comments.

with respect, case, i believe you've rejected secrets in the past for slurs. slurs are not opinions, after all, and rejecting secrets using slurs isn't harming the op. allowing them harms other people in this community though. personally i think you should disallow slurs in the secrets. tr*nny isn't even an uncommon or obscure slur; i think it's entirely justified for people to be upset that you allowed it, particularly since it was not warned for at all.

I have disallowed some secrets - but, it's always been not because a slur was used at all, but because a slur targeted a specific real person. Like (just as an example) "this particular, specific real author person whose LJ I will use as the background for an image is a cunt" - it's not because the slur "cunt" was used, but because it was personally attacking a specific, real life person who was identified in the secret.

Stuff like "I think this fictional character is a bitch" has always been allowed in the past, and we've seen a whole lot of those.

If it seemed legitimate, I probably would, yes. (This isn't an excuse to flood next week with offensive secrets, by the way - if there's a sudden flood of them it'll be pretty obvious the intent is just to see what gets by, which lessens the legitimacy.)

secrets containing slurs aren't necessarily blatant and boring trolls like I'm guessing the SJW ones are. we've had legitimate secrets that were pretty un-politically correct before (ones that were far more offensive than the one in question) and I imagine we'll have them in the future
