*looks up Tony Abbott*

*looks up Australian politics*

I'm confused...why is the Liberal Party the conservative party?

The best thing to do with the connection between party names and ideology in the English-speaking world is to ignore it altogether, frankly. It's almost impossible to see in what sense any given political party or position is liberal because the word has so many meanings and has such a long, complicated history, so might as well not bother worrying about it.

Try looking up Norwegian politics, the Parties: Left and Right are one the same side or the political spectrum...

Or Danish politics, in which the party called left is actually on the right

FUCK YOU IT IS YOUR FAULT!

Because Left (or Venstre) is on the right side along with Right (Høyre).

Random story, we used to have a party in Norway named: Anders Langes Parti for sterkt nedsatte skatter of avgifter, which today is FRP (Fremmskritspartiet), which are the biggest racists out there...

What can I say, we weren't the best at the whole running your country thing...? I'm pretty sure we had a Højre/right once too, they just didn't do well and disappeared at some point, and now we're left with Ventre being confusing as fuck.

Oh hey, we used to have Fremskridtspartiet, too! Same story with the lower taxes and the very right wing politics. They're not around anymore, but we do have an off-shot of their party still hanging about. I don't think either of them had that kind of name, although we did once have a comedian/actor/entertainer guy who was elected on a platform of fair wind on bike paths (as far as I know, that was his entire platform. He served out his term, afaik).

I... have never really thought about it? They just are what they are.

Sky is blue, grass is green, Liberal Party are idiots.

Because they're economically liberal.

Because American definitions don't make any sense.

This is the reason that I get yelled at for saying "I act conservatively." Apparently that means I go around personally kicking unwed mothers as opposed to not being flashy.

Liberal in the American sense is probably one of the more sensible American terms, honestly. It's relatively correct.

The problem is that liberal has meant a hell of a lot of things in history and it's quite hard to say what it should mean. It's even meant a lot of things to the people who have used the term (look at Herbert Spencer yelling at other liberals because he wanted the term to mean something very close to "libertarian" and a lot of other liberals wanted to do things like regulate industry). So how do you tell whether someone is using it "correctly"? Which sense of it is the correct one? The liberal nationalists? The 'classical liberal' libertarians? The mainstream liberals? It's almost impossible to say what's the correct usage. It's a contentious term.

I do think that the American usage of it is not entirely wrong, certainly it's not an inaccurate description of the contemporary Democratic party. That's not to say that American political terminology is logical; it's deeply illogical and makes no sense, and I certainly sympathize with your point about "conservative" and all that. But this example is fairly sensible.
