Australian Election

(Anonymous) 2013-09-06 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
IS TODAY.

The polls make me want to cry.

I still haven't decided which Country I'm fleeing to when Tony Abbott wins.
Thoughts? Recommendations?

I know we aren't exactly America and nobody cares about our elections, but feel free to have an opinion anyway, foreigners!

*looks up Tony Abbott*

*looks up Australian politics*

I'm confused...why is the Liberal Party the conservative party?

Re: Australian Election

(Anonymous) 2013-09-06 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
The best thing to do with the connection between party names and ideology in the English-speaking world is to ignore it altogether, frankly. It's almost impossible to see in what sense any given political party or position is liberal because the word has so many meanings and has such a long, complicated history, so might as well not bother worrying about it.

Try looking up Norwegian politics, the Parties: Left and Right are one the same side or the political spectrum...

I... have never really thought about it? They just are what they are.

Sky is blue, grass is green, Liberal Party are idiots.

Re: Australian Election

(Anonymous) 2013-09-06 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Because they're economically liberal.

Because American definitions don't make any sense.

This is the reason that I get yelled at for saying "I act conservatively." Apparently that means I go around personally kicking unwed mothers as opposed to not being flashy.

Wow, I never thought there was anything in Aussie land more poisonous than the spiders, but apparently the politicians got the spiders beat. Emigrate to NZ, it's close and you can always use it as a stopping off point for the Grey Havens/

(Anonymous) 2013-09-06 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Sounds good to me!

Someone should warn NZ about the incoming boat people.

I wonder if we could defeat Abbott by dropping his Speedos in Mt Doom.

Good luck Australians! I hope the election goes well for you guys, and if it makes you feel any better our "conservative" side is in the running to win too (elections on Monday), which makes me quite a sad person...

Mostly because the political party I like is on that side (though tiny) and I don't want to vote for them, because I don't want their side to end up winning the damn thing... Why must the only party with great School politics and Health and whatever collaborate with the damn racist idiots on the left side?

/end rant

It really is like having to choose between two evils.
I'm voting for the lesser evil but if Labor loses they really only have themselves to blame.

Re: Australian Election

(Anonymous) 2013-09-06 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG NO.

I forgot about the sausage sizzle.
I have to walk through the food area to vote and I am on a liquid only diet after surgery.

If possible, this day just got worse.

Voting Below The Line

(Anonymous) 2013-09-06 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
So, who's voting below the line?

Also, Clive Palmer. Just, Clive Palmer. What.

Re: Voting Below The Line

(Anonymous) 2013-09-06 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
The Palmer United ads confuse me.

What are you? *head tilt*

Re: Voting Below The Line

(Anonymous) 2013-09-07 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
All 97 of them X_X

and there were a couple of names I didn't recognise at all? And the guy who was so crazy family first kicked him out?

Re: Australian Election

(Anonymous) 2013-09-07 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
I voted below the line and it took fooorrreeeverrr

But I did like that a lot of parties advertisements are "Don't want Tony in? Vote for us"

Do you happen to know if we'll find out tonight or tomorrow? I don't have a tv so I can't exactly watch it like we did in the Howard/Rudd elections..

Re: Australian Election

(Anonymous) 2013-09-07 12:12 am (UTC)(link)

Well, if we find out tonight that will mean the polls are right and the Coalition won easily, so personally I don't mind if it takes a bit longer as long as Abbott doesn't get in.

I'm looking at New Zealand, personally. I like New Zealand. I'm going on a two-week cruise there in a few months, if I jump ship, does that make me a boat person?

6PM

6pm for me, here's to a resigned page of live updates opened as the votes get counted.

Come on W.A, catch up
