I get what you're saying OP. I agree, I thought it was a bit off that a guy with a PhD in physics was acting like a medical doctor.

To hijack this thread (sorry, OP!) As far as Pacific Rim and the dinosaurs go, Travis Beacham has clarified that, saying that the scientists knew that.

"Newt knows dinosaurs did not have two brains.... But Newt isn’t referencing real dinosaur biology here. He’s referencing the famous myth as shorthand, because its logic does apply to the actual animal in question. For a creature the size of a kaiju (many many times larger than any dinosaur), the nerve conduction velocity from the tail to the head would be something of a problem."

In both the comics and the Bixby TV series, Bruce also studied medicine, so it doesn't seem like a stretch to think that he has some medical background (especially given his area of research).

More likely, though, he's an omniscientist, as so many in sci-fi are.
