Wasn't the point of that joke was that he's not a psychologist, specifically?

Do we know that MCU Bruce doesn't have any medical training? It's never said either way so I assume he did.

He was referring to the fact that he wasn't a therapist, though, which is...not quite the same as a doctor who practices physical medicine. I know he's not one of those either, but he studies gamma radiation...I feel like he'd know a thing or two about certain aspects of physical medicine.

Well, that's why it didn't bother me, anyway.

idk I kinda got the impression that he wasn't 'playing doctor' so much as the people were treating him as a doctor. Like, they keep bringing him sick and hurt people, what's he supposedta do? "I don't really...I'm more of a theoretical...ok, hold on, let me do what I can"

He probably would have a medical background, given the research he does.

(and as other said, he referred to not being a shrink).

He'd have enough medical knowledge to administer basic first aid at least, which is more than poor people in India might get at all.
He probably won't cure them of cancer, but someone who can dress wounds or fix a broken arm would already be very valuable to that community.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-06 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I think OP meant that the "not that kind of doctor" comment implies that he's a different type of doctor, as in a doctor of medicine which the OP doesn't think is true. (I don't know MCU or the comics enough to debate this fact). FYI OP, you can have a doctorate in Phycics.

I get what you're saying OP. I agree, I thought it was a bit off that a guy with a PhD in physics was acting like a medical doctor.

Then I happily shoved it under a rug & pretended it didn't happen.

I forget, was Ruffalo!Hulk supposed to be his own character, an extension of Norton!Hulk, an amalgamation of Norton and Bana, or what? Because Bana!Hulk was very obviously a research scientist in the medical field, and would have had sufficient training to do Doctors Without Borders work. And all I can remember about Norton's Bruce is that he was enough of a douche to get his radioactive poison blood into food when he worked in that Slurm factory, and that does not seem medically sound. Of course, while watching Avengers, I assumed the implication was, since Ruffalo is a new Bruce in a new movie, we are to run on what we're shown, and that is that he does have medical training.

Bruce Banner's movie backstory is a clusterfuck, is what I'm saying. Be glad he was as cohesive as he was.

Do you count comic book canon? Some people see it as distinct from MCU canon (which I do for a lot of things as well).

http://incrediblehulkonline.com/bannerhistory.html

"Bruce attended Desert State University in undergraduate college. ...

Bruce next attended an unknown medical college where he met Angela Lipscombe and started a relationship with her....

Bruce was able to attend graduate school at the California Institute of Technology. He studied nuclear physics."

In that canon, he does have medical training to be "that kind" of doctor. I've not yet seen The Incredible Hulk, so I do not know if it was specifically contradicted in that canon. (Although on the television show, Dr. Banner was a medical doctor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Incredible_Hulk_(TV_series)#Premise "David Bruce Banner, M.D., Ph.D...."), so it has carried over to some canons.)

Actually, Bruce Banner did attend medical school. That's where he met Angela Lipscombe. He also did grad school at California Institute of Technology.

Source: A lifetime of reading Marvel comics. It is mentioned in The Incredible Hulk #12.

I don't remember those scenes that well, but wasn't he just treating symptoms like fever and telling people to keep the sick away from the healthy? That's not complicated stuff. I've nursed friends and family and I'm way less versed in biology than Banner is supposed to be.

I never thought he was an MD doctor, I just assumed since he was in the middle of nowhere India as most likely the only foreigner, people would ask him for help...

I assume most scientists who work in a lab have first aid training* (?) so he could help with some things, and things like that spread and you don't turn away desperate people if you have the ability to at least help them a bit.

*Or at least he first aid training from Primary School and High School, and he is smart he must have at least read the first aid posters a couple of times... I have no formal medical training beyond the first aid stuff I had at school, but I still know how to stabilize broken bones, stop bleedings and help out with common medical issues, just by being taught it during my childhood, reading about it or just experience.

Secret 7 - Spoilers for Iron Man 3

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-09-07 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
spoilers for Iron Man 3

[Picture is actor Mark Ruffalo as the character Dr. Bruce Banner from the new Marvel movies (The Avengers, etc.). He is a man with light olive skin and short dark hair, the beginnings of a beard and mustache, and wearing an orange shirt and brown jacket and pants. He is standing during nighttime, illuminated by light orange lightning from off-screen, in the middle of wooden structures and tents.]

I haven't noticed anyone else in the fandom who was at all bothered by his "playing doctor" in some impoverished corner of India without a medical license or any sort of formal medical training.

It really made the "not that kind of doctor" joke in the Iron Man 3 stinger ring hollow and hypocritical.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-07 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
It's not clear what disease the people Bruce is helping have, but it's clearly contagious. He's also not working their alone. It could well be that he's not trying to practice medicine, but rather assisting a short-staffed clinic with basic medical care in a way that he's uniquely qualified to do, since he's immune to human diseases.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-07 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Did it bother you equally that Tony is practicing physics (creating elements and stuff) with only a couple of master's degrees in engineering?

Yes, how dare he help those poor people who probably had no other options. He should have made them wait and send for a ~*~real~*~ doctor.

Maybe he wasn't playing doctor, maybe he was playing nurse

(Anonymous) 2013-09-07 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
Or EMT. There's a lot of range between a first-aid course and an MD. That is, if you really think he can't have an MD - I believe there are actually MD-PhD programs that provide training in both medicine and research. They are specifically designed for those who want to become research physicians. Maybe he did the physics thing but got interested in medicine. Maybe it was the other way around. He's a guy, in his forties (I think, anyway). You can get a lot done in a quarter of a century (or three and a half decades if he was a Doogie Howser-type).

In regards to comic book-type canons, I just generally assume that the really smart person has a doctorate in Science and All Science Things because that's typically how it winds up getting used anyway.

But like other people have said, even a basic first aid course would probably cover a lot of what we see him do and is more than anyone in that village would have had access to themselves otherwise.

[personal profile] kelincihutan 2013-09-07 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
I assumed from Banner's comments during the big fight scene "I got low, tried to kill myself, so I moved on..." that part of that moving on was acquiring some kind of medical certification. Admittedly, with Hulk coming out in 2008 and Avengers coming out in 2012, he would've had to do it really really fast. But Banner's a genius and it's a comic-based universe, so I'm okay with a little hand-waving here.

We have actually talked about this before

(Anonymous) 2013-09-07 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
At length, on various anon memes, shortly after the movie came out. The only thread I can find right now is one from the kink meme discussion, but I'm sure the anon meme covered it as well (specifically the skeeviness of "white dude helping poor brown people"). So, you know, I'm kind of wondering where you've been, OP, that you think no one else cares about this.

http://avengerkink.livejournal.com/1154.html?thread=26986370#t26986370

(Anonymous) 2013-09-07 11:09 am (UTC)(link)
I was uncomfortable about that, too. It felt like a cheap, smug, hamfisted way to try and force the audience to like the character. Of course, there was much about that movie that felt cheap, smug and hamfisted to me, which disappointed me a lot.

Random Anon

(Anonymous) 2013-09-07 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I just thought he was trying to get away from Tony's rambling. I got the impression that Tony had been ranting at Bruce for hours on end at that point.

something else to consider...

(Anonymous) 2013-09-08 05:55 am (UTC)(link)
Psychiatrists and Psychologists have their own rules too. And one of those rules is that its unethical to be a therapist for someone that you know/are close too.

So even if Bruce was a psychologist/psychiatrist, he really shouldn't be treating Tony because they're friends (or at least work together/know each other somewhat) and Bruce wouldn't be able to be a neutral party.
