I never thought he was an MD doctor, I just assumed since he was in the middle of nowhere India as most likely the only foreigner, people would ask him for help...

I assume most scientists who work in a lab have first aid training* (?) so he could help with some things, and things like that spread and you don't turn away desperate people if you have the ability to at least help them a bit.

*Or at least he first aid training from Primary School and High School, and he is smart he must have at least read the first aid posters a couple of times... I have no formal medical training beyond the first aid stuff I had at school, but I still know how to stabilize broken bones, stop bleedings and help out with common medical issues, just by being taught it during my childhood, reading about it or just experience.

That was bad phrasing on my part, what I meant that if none of the locals can help, and I imagine Bruce would try to help everyone as much as he can, so it would make sense for them to ask him for help if he has given some good advice or helped someone earlier.

Did that make more sense? It is getting late and I am not sure how well I can get my point through.
