Or EMT. There's a lot of range between a first-aid course and an MD. That is, if you really think he can't have an MD - I believe there are actually MD-PhD programs that provide training in both medicine and research. They are specifically designed for those who want to become research physicians. Maybe he did the physics thing but got interested in medicine. Maybe it was the other way around. He's a guy, in his forties (I think, anyway). You can get a lot done in a quarter of a century (or three and a half decades if he was a Doogie Howser-type).

This is what I figured, too. He's got some sort of biology background to be working with gamma radiation and people.
