But there is well-written YA?
bur: It's an octopus with a bat from Pirate Baby's Cabana Street Fight 2006. (Default)

Can't tell if troll.

SA. No, I'm ESL and I can hardly understand this secret. What does "bag on" mean? I can't find a good definition.

I think "bag on" means "insult" or "mock." It's a very unusual phrasing, though--I think it might be British slang, maybe?

(Anonymous) 2013-09-07 09:10 am (UTC)(link)
Nope, not British. I'm pretty sure I've heard the phrasing before, though. Australian maybe? And yep, it would mean to take the piss out of or to mock.
bur: Captain America being all Sleeping Beauty. (Cap asleep)

I've never heard the phrase either, but I'm guessing it means "complain about".

(Anonymous) 2013-09-07 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
SA. Okay, thank you!

Try the Wicked Lovely series.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-07 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
YMMV
I didn't get through the first book of that series before my brain was like "Yeah, no, just stop". I mean, it really stuck to its teen cliches hard.

i somehow managed to read the first two books. god were they terrible. (at least they were amusing...)

There's quite a few good YA if you look hard enough:

DAUGHTER OF SMOKE AND BONE by Laini Taylor
FEED by M.T. Anderson
THE BOOK THIEF by Markus Zusak
THE GOLDEN COMPASS by Phillip Pullman
GRACELING by Kristin Cashore
UNWIND by Neal Shusterman
THE AMULET OF SAMARKAND by Jonathan Stroud

(Anonymous) 2013-09-07 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Robin McKinley is pretty good too.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-09 02:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh my, a big yes to all of these!

(Anonymous) 2013-09-09 07:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Not sure if these count as YA Lit or Children Lit but SKULDUGGERY PLEASANT by Derek Landy and LEVIATHAN by Scott Westerfield are also really good.
