This is a bit off topic, sorry, but am I the only one who thinks the actors who play the main characters are bland beyond measure?

I've never seen or read this piece of work, but I can tell you that Jamie Campbell Bower is the blandest thing since oatmeal.

Also, lol at them trying to rip off Twilight with that image.

Yeah, I haven't read the books either and with these actors I don't think I'll watch the movie.

I don't know, but geez, it sure seems like the lighting/make-up/what-have-you conspires to make the all look much less attractive than they can be.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-06 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
...Do people do this?

Well, I don't think much of the opinions of people who dismiss all YA novels ever as badly-written or childish, either, so if that's what you're saying, fine.

If on the other hand you're saying that no one can ever think any YA novel is badly-written or childish if they like this series, then naaahhhhh. I'm sure there's worse. I don't know what it is off the top of my head, but I am confident it exists. Maybe some of those unspeakable 'for kids' media tie-in novels.

I've seen some avid Twilight-haters on tumblr/Facebook who absolutely adore The Mortal Instruments. Which wouldn't be so bad if they didn't openly mock Twilight for being cliche and badly written, while claiming TMI is some sort of amazing masterpiece of literature.

Oh good lord. Something tells me "irony" is not in their vocabulary.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-06 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
But there is well-written YA?

Can't tell if troll.

SA. No, I'm ESL and I can hardly understand this secret. What does "bag on" mean? I can't find a good definition.

Try the Wicked Lovely series.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-07 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
YMMV
I didn't get through the first book of that series before my brain was like "Yeah, no, just stop". I mean, it really stuck to its teen cliches hard.

i somehow managed to read the first two books. god were they terrible. (at least they were amusing...)

(Anonymous) 2013-09-07 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
There's quite a few good YA if you look hard enough:

DAUGHTER OF SMOKE AND BONE by Laini Taylor
FEED by M.T. Anderson
THE BOOK THIEF by Markus Zusak
THE GOLDEN COMPASS by Phillip Pullman
GRACELING by Kristin Cashore
UNWIND by Neal Shusterman
THE AMULET OF SAMARKAND by Jonathan Stroud

(Anonymous) 2013-09-07 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Robin McKinley is pretty good too.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-09 02:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh my, a big yes to all of these!

(Anonymous) 2013-09-09 07:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Not sure if these count as YA Lit or Children Lit but SKULDUGGERY PLEASANT by Derek Landy and LEVIATHAN by Scott Westerfield are also really good.

Secret 5 - The Mortal Instruments - City of Bones

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-09-07 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
[Picture is the cast of the movie "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones". They are two young women and three young men wearing sort of dark street clothing.]

If you like this series, but bag out other Young Adult novels for being badly-written or childish, I judge the hell out of you.

I judge you twice as hard if you bag out the fans of other Young Adult novels.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-07 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
It is just me, or do they look a bit...odd? Especially the two and the ends. To me they look very "my hed is pastede on yay".

I was thinking the same thing. Also the lighting/shading of the whole shot makes them look very... sickly I guess is the best word I can think of at the mo'.

Agreed. At least other YA authors aren't bullies.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-07 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
It makes me really, really sad when I see other YA authors stick up for CC. Like... no. She may be your friend, but she's horrible to other people, and her actions are not worthy of defense.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-07 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
WAIT OMFG Robert Sheehan is in this!?

Dammit. I love him, at least from Misfits... now I'm actually tempted to see this film... but I have no interest in the plot. I've tried reading it, and I watched the trailer, and it just fell flat.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-07 09:46 am (UTC)(link)
Idk anything about the book, but my friend told me it's based on some shitty hp fanfic, and I thought she was talking about My Immortal. Imagine my disappointment...

So are the three in the middle supposed to be Harry, Hermione, and Draco?
