Re: "But what about your real name:" a new ad hominem attack

Those people are dumb. (Or quite possibly not using their actual real name, which is interesting, and also dumb.)

What I like about anonymous discussions on the internet is that the interaction is stripped of the filters and conventions we apply to conversations with people we know. You can't attach a reputation to a faceless comment, you have to judge the content on its own merit. Also, people tend to say more of what they really feel. Just look at this comm, it's powered by anonymity and its ability to let people say things that they feel even pseudonyms restrict them from giving voice to.

And even then, a lot of sites I've been to in the past year or so have asked me to comment ONLY with my twitter, Facebook or google plus account... and it sucks because of everything you just said.

da

Yeah you write that comment, click 'guest' and it still tries to make me log in with facebook or something.
No, no I don't want my opinions of whatever spamming my facebook or for random strangers to easily see it. Let me make my comment and wander off!

You can't attach a reputation to a faceless comment, you have to judge the content on its own merit.

You appear to think most anonymous discussions contain merit.

Check the comment section to your average news article. The demand that you use twitter or facebook is probably the only thing keeping bigotry down.

Just look at this comm

Yeah, seriously. JUST LOOK AT THIS COMM SOMETIMES. We have people saying women can't rape men, we've had some pretty odd transphobia, we have weird beefs over fiction. Meanwhile the people here with names tend to be at least marginally nicer. Facelessness does not make people better. Interaction stripped of filters gets more brutal. I'm worried you're in a bubble of nice woobies with positive blogs. Things powered by complete anonymity tend to be shit.

"You appear to think most anonymous discussions contain merit. "

wow rude.
Maybe anons don't want to hold discussions with you because you're always so aggressive about the lack of usernames. Seems to me it's about 50/50 whether posts are nice or not, regardless of if they have an account. There's nice comments, rude comments, senseless baiting on both sides.

You certainly don't help the matter. AYRT tried to open up a discussion with their own point and you shot them down. Ever wonder that maybe you're half the problem here? >:[

Dude. I'm talking about the internet writ large.

Not everything is about your personal fandom secrets experience.

Weren't you the one who made a snarky comment because of a book series I admitted I still like?

SA

And before you say that's different from making transphobic and sexist comments, obviously it is, my point is that you can use your actual internet handle and still say mean things when you're in a bad mood. Or even when you're not.

I'm not sure what happened in this vague past event, or whether you interpreted snark as outright meanness--which seems to happen a lot, apparently many of you have friends who only communicate through hugs and gentle mewing noises--but yeah, the fact that you had to go back and clarify that me being mean about a book series isn't quite the same as transphobia and sexism is kind of the point.

news site comment sections with names attached are just as dumb as ones that are anonymous

i'm not saying either way is better or worse, really, i guess what i'm saying is that people are fucking idiot assholes a lot of the time & anonymity doesn't really enter into it
