I'm with you on so many levels. Sadly, I think part of it is that people got into the internet when it stopped being a "thing" to care that saying things under your actual name can be a bad idea. It strikes me as ironic that some of them are probably the same people who told me fandom sounded dangerous because my fellow Harry Potter nerd from Sweden could really be an evil stalker from two towns over. But nope, now they don't care if the whole world knows their name and where they live and work.

One wonders if this period of nonchalance about protecting your real life identity will ever come to an end, or if this is the new normal forever now

it's not like its discouraged by various internet companies either
