Secret 2 - Pokémon Gold

[Picture is Lance from the videogame series "Pokémon". He is a young man with light skin and spiky light red hair wearing a blue and black suit (pants, closed jacket, cape, boots) with orange lines. He is gesturing with one arm and looking angry.]

The rivals in the games have always been irrelevant to me. Even when I was younger, I'd forget what they looked like in-game, and what I'd named them. I just didn't care about them.

So the first time I played Gold, I thought the comment about Giovanni's son having red hair was a reference to Lance. I never realized you rival/Silver had red hair. I'm not much into the fandom, I just like the games, so nobody was around to correct me until a friend made a random comment about this a few years ago.

It'll always be Lance in my mind though. This one little misunderstanding led me to inventing some rather fucked-up headcanon and I love it. But people give me weird looks when I mention it and then I feel stupid [sad face emoticon].

They were pretty much just plot devices.

Nah, it just got wordy and I feel weird if I get too wordy in comments. So here goes...

The basic idea is that Giovanni had a child (Lance) with a Dragon Clan woman so he could get his foot in the door with that rather powerful family. Almost from the beginning he was trying to get his son, who was very adept with handling powerful dragon pokemon, to lend his talents to his Rocket mafia group. He and Lance clashed from day one though, so it didn't work out as well as Giovanni had planned. Eventually Lance was like 'fuck you' and became Champion so he'd have the resources to go after Giovanni and his mob. But that kinda backfired because like any decent mob boss, Giovanni is an expert manipulator, especially when it comes to family, and now with his son as Champion, he's got a way to control the Elite Four and thus, the world. Lance is all 'damn that was stupid of me' but he refuses to give up his position, because he enjoys having power. Just like his father.

From that premise I just think to myself "well how can I make life suck even more for Lance?" and that's pretty much the direction my headcanon goes.

Which...probably explains why I give him a hard time in my headcanon. I tend to do that to my favorite characters.

I'd actually really like to see a game where the champion is closely related to the main villain, too. N and Ghetsis came the closest, but that's not quite the same idea...

It's a fun idea to play around with, especially if you're like me and try to destroy your own childhood by making everything you loved Dark and Gritty (tm). :B

It would certainly be interesting to see in the games. Actually I'm somewhat surprised they haven't tried it yet.

Pfft, Dark and Gritty (tm) is the best way to enjoy things ;) Basically all of my favourite Pokemon fics are on the dark side. It's fun that way!

(Mostly original trainer fic (Regret by Crukix, Morphic by Dragonfree, Clouded Sky by Negrek, Six Spirit by Ysavvryl, although that's not as dark as some of the others, and my absolute favourite is Pedestal by Digital Skitty), one canon fic (BW, Alphabet Soup by CoffeeIncluded).)

Well, we do have a new generation coming out in a month! Fingers crossed, heh.

The new gen looks exciting, but I have issues with the 3DS and no it's not just the 3D, something about the screen itself gives me a headache :(. So this'll probably be another gen I have to skip.

Oh, damn! Have you seen the new 2DS? It's cheaper, no 3D, and it's meant for younger kids, but it may have screen settings that could work better for you. Alternatively, working with the brightness settings on the 3DS might work - I find that 5 hurts my eyes too, but 3 is perfect.
