What do you think is the most offensive slur of all time, in your opinion?

I don't mean to start wank and I'm not asking anyone to debate about which should be worse, I'm honestly curious what people would personally consider the "worst" (esp. people not from the USA) and how people prioritize slurs that might/might not apply to them personally.

I just want to hear slurs in other languages. I already know all the English ones.

I really hate the c-word. It's just such an ugly word, no matter what the context.

They are a noble people and to reduce them to such is cruel.

I think that has to be up there, for me.

But shame on you if you actually use it to insult people. It is a word that has no meaning outside of its use as an insult and was obviously created to be degrading to women.

I find this interesting to think about. What are your criteria for worst?

Insults the most people? - That would probably be something misogynistic, as that's 50% of the population.

Most loaded? - Probably something race-based that has horrific history behind it.

Most widespread, casual, and accepted usage now? - Something LGBT-related, maybe.

This is a good breakdown, in my opinion.

I'm interested to see the replies, too. I remember recently there was a thread where someone said they were "such a spaz" and some people pointed out how that was a really offensive word, and I'd never even known that was offensive or how it was used in other countries. It's the same as when I learned the history of the word "gypped" and realized how messed up it was, and yet most people don't seem to know it has more meaning to it.

It'd be interesting to see which words people consider most offensive in different countries around the world.

Well, the reason most people don't know it has more meaning to it is because that meaning had largely been obscured by time. I'm not entirely sure it's a good thing that the trend has been reversed, as the net result is that we suddenly have a lot more slurs than we did, and a lot of arguments and wank arising from situations where nobody would have been offended at all if somebody hadn't 'rediscovered' the old meaning.

I don't know, slurs are meant to be rude so I don't really think about their offensive ratings. They're just rude words.

The n-word (wow I feel weird even typing it, and I curse like a sailor, but I never say that one) is definitely one of the most offensive terms in the USA - IF you're not a black person talking to another black person. I've heard it spoken aloud many times, but always in that context. (I have seen it in writing, sometimes quoting somebody, as a slur, and it's horribly offensive - I remember some comments made by some very rural, very out-of-touch, very conservative people when Obama was running for president that made me ashamed of people...) I just stay the hell away from it, myself. I've never heard of it being used in other places, since I thought it originated here. Do people use it in other countries, that you know of?

I always thought cunt was understood to be the worst of the four letter words in English - but I think its offensiveness is being diluted quickly nowadays.

I've never minded this word that much because it's used in the same way as "bitch" and I don't think that connotation is the worst possible thing. I mean, being called a cunt/bitch for being assertive or speaking my mind? Annoying and shitty, but I at least I can attempt to challenge that.

The one I hate the most (used outside of porn because I find it hot in context) is "pussy". Because it's almost always used on men to demean them as if being anything remotely similar to a girl is a bad thing. When men use that as an insult to one another, it's far more dehumanizing to me. I become the pathetic thing these guys are comparing one another to to make them feel like shit. I'd much, MUCH rather be seen as a "cunt" than see people try to tear each other down by associating weakness with me.

Gonna have to go with the n-word, though like the other anon who mentioned it, I also am not black. It's the only word I was given to understand growing up I must NEVER EVER SAY UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, because it was EVIL, and that made a lasting impression. (To be fair, I suspect this is mainly because there weren't many other racial epithets I was likely to be exposed to in my neighborhood. I do not, in fact, recall ever hearing some other common ones until I was a young adult.)

As for slurs that might be applied to me personally, I have a hearty dislike for the term 'trailer trash,' but I don't fly off the handle if I hear it. I've personally seen so many mobile-dwelling folk live down to the stereotype (not all of us, by any means, but depressingly many) that it's hard to blame other people for making assumptions.
