There are actually plenty of manga and anime series that know when to quite. I don't have any hard research to back me up, but from what I've seen, never-ending series are more the exception than the rule.

I've been into anime and manga for more than 15 years, and really, super-long series are in the minority. Most shows last either 13, 26, or 52 episodes.
