Find better series.

Hell, one of the things I love about anime is how many good series there are that are perfectly happy to stick to a thirteen episode run, and that's it - or at worst maybe two or three full seasons.

You compare that to American tv, and all the best shows seem to aim for a minimum of like five seasons.

Just stay away from the big three.

Secret 6 - Anime and Manga

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-09-07 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
[Picture is white text over a black blank background.]

I wish I still liked anime and manga. But a lot of the series that seem like stuff I would like just go on too long. I can't commit to that. I used to be into One Piece, but dropped it when it showed no sign of stopping.

I just like short series, and I wish more manga would know when to end.

last long anime I attempted was inu yasha. I regret everything. :(

I fell out of love with anime for a while, but have recently gotten sucked back into it with great series such as Shingeki no Kyojin and Free!

But yeah, I can't do the never-ending anime that doesn't quit. I watched Naruto for a good while, but finally got tired of it. Same with InuYasha.

Give me a good 13-26 episode series, and I'm good. (Although I think SNK is going to be quite a bit longer than the 26 it's heading towards right now.)

I feel you OP. I think the main reason I couldn't get into Attack on Titan is not knowing how soon it will end.

Length doesn't bother me so much as filler. I hate irrelevant plots or stuff that just feels stuck on to drag it out. Or when things start to repeat a formula. Bleach was the worst at that.

"But a lot of the series that seem like stuff I would like just goes on too long."

I feel that way about a lot of TV period, which is partially why I have trouble catching up with series that I'm far behind on, or starting anything that's over 2 or 3 seasons long; it just seems like too much.

This is why I try to start shows I think I'll be interested in when they first air. I can watch once a week or watch a few episodes at a time instead of the alternative.

But yea, like you I enjoy anime but rarely watch it and won't commit to anything that's stupidly long with no end in sight.

I'm the same way with live-action TV, OP. I have a friend that's trying to get me to watch Supernatural, but that is a goddamn undertaking and it's way too daunting.

I haven't really watched any anime this year. I tried Attack on Titan, but I had trouble taking it seriously and it made me want to write bakery AUs (the cookies are people). Tiger & Bunny spoiled me - I'd love to watch another show with adult protagonists.

But there are many short mangas and one season animes (with 11 to 26 episodes) :/

Just stay away from Jump stuff, since they do milk any manga for as long as they can, and you'll find something.

At this pint I feel the same about live action tv. There's series out there that seem interesting, but there's like 6 seasons and it's daunting.

There are actually plenty of manga and anime series that know when to quite. I don't have any hard research to back me up, but from what I've seen, never-ending series are more the exception than the rule.

+1

I feel you about One Piece. I gave up on the show and went for the manga instead, but it just went on and on and ON, so I dropped that, too. I'll try again when it's freaking over. I was able to stick with the Naruto manga, though. I grew up on the short-and-sweet style of Toonami and Adult Swim anime, anything longer than some fifty-odd episodes and I just check out.

And all the wonderful recommendations in this thread are killing me. Between Netflix and Hulu, all those short series start to add up after about the twentieth show, damn it.

...but, while we're at it, try Ergo Proxy, 26 episodes and amazing. Also Hellsing Ultimate, 10 episodes of bloody violence.

I don't know, I kind of hate the fact that anime fandoms don't stick around as long as they used to.

An anime finishes its run and by the next week it's old news and hey look! new anime, let's everyone go climb on board and the 'old' anime fandom has dried up and nothing new is put out. And what little new IS put out is like shouting in a well. No one's around to engage.
