To be honest I think we all just got older and realized that shipping arguments are pretty pointless.

Has the average age of participants in fandom actually gone up, though?

I thought most SJW stuff was done by the "tumblr crowd", ie younger fandom-goers...

I think fandomsecrets has. A lot of people here have been here for several years and we seem to be mostly mid-twenties-early thirties with a few older people. So when there were probably more teenagers here back in the day.

I think, as a general rule, communities have its members age because they have at least part of their original member stay around stay around and age. But newer communities and new fandoms (especially with a younger demographic) might have younger members.

Although, my main fandoms are aimed at a younger demographic, so things might be different for one with am older one.

One of the things i love about the homestuck fandom is how it avoided this. Not that it's flawless, but there's so many ships that no aggressive sides ever really formed. Most folks can get along with their directly oppositional ships just fine and at most go draw art in reaponse to something, that tends to end well for everybody.
