This is pretty much why I'm not all that active in fandom anymore. It's not that SJ issues aren't relevant to me.

It's just that, you know, I have to deal with misogyny and heterosexism in my real life

and I don't fucking feel like hearing people do nothing but talk about how THIS CANON IS SEXIST OH NOES when I really just want to relax and have fun.

I think part of the issue is that in those lighter-weight arguments you mentioned, someone can come along and point out that it really doesn't matter, it's just opinions, there's no reason they can't coexist, etc. If people tack a facade of social justice onto their cause, they can argue that it is RIGHT.

I miss the days when people wanked for hours about which guy the girl should choose or which guy tops in the slash ship or other stupid shit like that. Now all we have is social justice and bitching about other people and other fucking boring shit like that. Am I in the wrong circles? When did we all get so serious?

I feel like maybe people are more multifannish now and there are fewer people who do fandom just for their one OTP. But that might just be where I hang out?

This is what I've been saying for like, years. I feel like SJ nitpicking has replaced the kind of nitpicking that is actually canon-relevant and interesting. Remember when you used to see detailed essays analyzing a character's personality, and all kinds of crazy fan-theories about everything you can think of? And people would have these long conversation threads just mulling over different aspects of the story/characters/etc.? I feel like you don't see that anymore because yelling at people about word usage and warnings and getting outraged about trivial shit has become the Thing to Do. And it's just... I dunno, way too meta for my tastes or something.

The problem here is that the "SJWs" tend not to have much in the way of, well, lives. By that I mean they appear to be, in general, young (hovering around college age or younger) and deeply sunk into internet fandom communities. This is their world. So they care a great deal about, say, whatever show they're obsessively following and will act as if that has the same weight as day to day life because that IS their day to day life.

For example, someone drawing a character as the wrong color is literally the worst racism they have ever personally experienced, so they'll treat it as such.

Personally, I think it's a case of non-fans jumping on the band wagon of the latest craze just to feel morally superior. I have come across one too many threads where the person standing on their soap box spouting SJW jargon had only the faintest idea of the fandom they were trying to be a part of. And most of the information was gleamed off of sites like Wikipedia.

Awww cheer up. I'm 96% certain it's a cyclical thing -- in a few years, after some of the now-popular styles of sjwism get exhausted and a couple new fandom juggernauts come along, we'll undoubtedly have some more prominent bouts of childish wank. For the time being...you just need to dig a bit deeper. It's still there :)

I'd rather have neither. I've grown weary of most wank to be honest, especially shipping wars. The fact that something that's supposed to be about love leads to so much hostility depresses the fuck out of me.
