What fandom is this OP? Because I enjoy A/B/O and while there are some good A/B/O fics in my fandom, I have read them all and they are not at all prevalent in comparison to non-A/B/O fics.

XMFC was a big one, Sherlock had quite a few, Avengers has some. Possibly Teen Wolf and Supernatural, although I'm not in those fandoms. :)

I feel you.

I've read one A/B/O fic that I actually liked, but I don't really care for the trope at all.

Secret 5 - Fanfiction, Alpha Beta Omega dynamics

[Picture is a naked person? and a nun or a nurse? leaning on and against a wooden structure next to an elevator.]

I really don't like A/B/O. Not just a mild dislike that it's not my kink but to the point that I feel physically ill when I read it. My current fandom is so full of it people don't always remember to warn for it.

I don't quite understand why I have such a violent reaction. I think it's because I hate and despite the idea of people being controlled by their bodies to the point of needing to penetrate/be penetrated.

every A/B/O fic is basically rape, why does nobody ever warn for that?

(Anonymous) 2013-09-10 09:46 am (UTC)(link)
yep it's a new way of writing all the old rape fics whilst getting to handwave it away.

oh sorry, "non-con". I am am sure we can blame SJW on this. Darn it people want to read/write rape fic and will find a way.

I gotta ask, what the hell is A/B/O anyway? Is it some sort of blood fetish for the horror fans? Please tell me it is something less insane than that.

Where's that commercial parody gif when you need it? (Y'know, the one where the kid says "Mommy, I want a fic with mpreg and knotting and self-lubricating bums!")

If I could find that gif I'd show it to you, because it tells you everything you need to know about a/b/o.

Yeah, it's pretty much the only aggressive trend in fandom that's ever gotten my back up. But it could always be worse; ero guro could have caught on instead.

A/B/O leaves me cold the way systematic BDSM leaves me cold. I mean, I like S&M and Seme/Uke tropes (and let's be real, A/B/O is like Seme/Uke X 100), but once put into a system w/rules and safewords, it's just not as sexy anymore *shrugs*

(Anonymous) 2013-09-10 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
i feel ya, op

usually i'm like all over fuck-or-die concepts but a/b/o... bluh i cannot into it at ALL

it's basically sanctioning seme/uke/switch roles as biological and talk about a mega dnw

I actually like it, though I find most people don't do it well. Perhaps it's been my fandoms, but I have found some good, "I have this biological urge, but I'm a grown woman, I can do whatever I want."

Then again, I don't read the ones where Alphas attack Omegas in heat, or where the Omegas just beg for it from anyone. I prefer the ones where they still respect each other in the morning.

That said, I agree that most people don't warn for their crazy head canons. I hate really getting into a fic only to realize it's gonna go majorly OoC to make the A/B/O work.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-10 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
You probably hate cats.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-10 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Mmmm, I love to prenetate/be prenetated.

Jokes aside, I used to feel the same as you about A/B/O, because the bestial aspects and the Dom/sub aspects really turned me off. (The mpreg I was strangely fine with.) But then I read a few out of curiosity, and I realised that when written right, I really like the exploration of worlds with biologically determined uneven power dynamics. And I quickly realised that though I still really don't like Dom/sub dynamics, one of my biggest kinks is someone being so overcome with desire that they can barely control themselves, which a/b/o delivers in troves. Plus, the set up often means you get a nice payoff of the romantic trope/kink/cliche of someone of higher status (an alpha) falling in love with someone of lower status (an omega).

What I'm trying to say is that it's not as weird as you think it is, or at least not that much weirder than any other fanfic cliche (Sex pollen, Fuck or die, Aliens made them do it, Soul Bonding, BDSM Slave AUs anyone?).

I want more ABO in my fandom!

I love it! Kink with a capital super-K.

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2013-09-10 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
That sucks balls. Maybe you can get a friend to check out fics you think are sketchy for you to see if they're ABO or not? That way you wouldn't run into it as much.

Or maybe just CTRL + F the word "omega" or something before you get into a fic?

Either way, I wish you the best of luck.

I just can't get over the image that between the knot and litter of ass puppies, the bottom guy's bunghole is going to be a foot wide.

I like A/B/O fics where, while the characters have heat/rut cycles, they can get through them without sex (maybe with the aid of medications, and a dildo), if they want to.

Of course it's almost a given that they won't do that in the course of the fic*, but I like to see fics that somehow work into the narrative that they do have control over themselves.

(* I have read one fic where the omega went through heat while in the company of a group of alphas... and wasn't mated by any of them - the fic is more about how after that heat cycle, several of those alphas start courting him.)

(Anonymous) 2013-09-10 09:12 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh I know. Fucking tag that shit.

I think the worst part for me is there is no free will. On one hand a world with no free will would make for a greatly terrifying speculative fiction.

On the other hand NOT FOR ROMANCE AND NOT FOR SEX. Stop trying to pass if off as making the characters happy.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-10 09:26 am (UTC)(link)
I agree, but mostly I wonder if you picked that picture so the person who transcribes the secrets has to try and find a way of describing it.

I hate A/B/O - but I actually think I wouldn't mind it so much, maybe even find it mildly interesting, if it wasn't for the M-Preg bullshit.

That was the I hate A/B/O secret of the week. Come back next week for a new one!
