(Anonymous) 2013-09-09 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)I've read one A/B/O fic that I actually liked, but I don't really care for the trope at all.
Secret 5 - Fanfiction, Alpha Beta Omega dynamics
I really don't like A/B/O. Not just a mild dislike that it's not my kink but to the point that I feel physically ill when I read it. My current fandom is so full of it people don't always remember to warn for it.
I don't quite understand why I have such a violent reaction. I think it's because I hate and despite the idea of people being controlled by their bodies to the point of needing to penetrate/be penetrated.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-10 12:14 am (UTC)(link)usually i'm like all over fuck-or-die concepts but a/b/o... bluh i cannot into it at ALL
it's basically sanctioning seme/uke/switch roles as biological and talk about a mega dnw

Then again, I don't read the ones where Alphas attack Omegas in heat, or where the Omegas just beg for it from anyone. I prefer the ones where they still respect each other in the morning.
That said, I agree that most people don't warn for their crazy head canons. I hate really getting into a fic only to realize it's gonna go majorly OoC to make the A/B/O work.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-10 01:40 am (UTC)(link)Jokes aside, I used to feel the same as you about A/B/O, because the bestial aspects and the Dom/sub aspects really turned me off. (The mpreg I was strangely fine with.) But then I read a few out of curiosity, and I realised that when written right, I really like the exploration of worlds with biologically determined uneven power dynamics. And I quickly realised that though I still really don't like Dom/sub dynamics, one of my biggest kinks is someone being so overcome with desire that they can barely control themselves, which a/b/o delivers in troves. Plus, the set up often means you get a nice payoff of the romantic trope/kink/cliche of someone of higher status (an alpha) falling in love with someone of lower status (an omega).
What I'm trying to say is that it's not as weird as you think it is, or at least not that much weirder than any other fanfic cliche (Sex pollen, Fuck or die, Aliens made them do it, Soul Bonding, BDSM Slave AUs anyone?).

Or maybe just CTRL + F the word "omega" or something before you get into a fic?
Either way, I wish you the best of luck.

Of course it's almost a given that they won't do that in the course of the fic*, but I like to see fics that somehow work into the narrative that they do have control over themselves.
(* I have read one fic where the omega went through heat while in the company of a group of alphas... and wasn't mated by any of them - the fic is more about how after that heat cycle, several of those alphas start courting him.)

(Anonymous) 2013-09-10 09:12 am (UTC)(link)I think the worst part for me is there is no free will. On one hand a world with no free will would make for a greatly terrifying speculative fiction.
On the other hand NOT FOR ROMANCE AND NOT FOR SEX. Stop trying to pass if off as making the characters happy.
