People end up hyperaware of their own sexuality because that's what others around them are forever noticing, criticizing, and trying to make them feel bad about. Sometimes people choose to take extra pride in, and therefore have extra focus on, their sexuality just to fend off everyone else's insistence that they be ashamed of it and hide it away for whatever reason.
