Not everyone in Harry Potter married their high school sweethearts.

Link followed Midna through the mirror in Twilight Princess - or he found another way to get to the Twili Realm. Nintendo, if you could make another game where that's part of the plot, that would be greeaaat. Also, every single person in Majora's Mask got their happy ending, and Link finished all the sidequests in time.

I'd say Lyra and Will find a way to talk to each other after The Amber Spyglass, but that would ruin the ending.

Not THAT many people married their high school sweethearts.

Those who did:
James and Lily
Molly and Arthur
Harry and Ginny
Ron and Hermione

Those who didn't:
Bill and Fleur
Tonks and Remus
Neville and Hannah
Luna and Rolf
Draco and Astoria
George and Angelina
Percy and Audrey

Then there are some who we have no idea about, like the Lestranges and the Malfoys.

Thank you. A lot of them went to the same school because it was the only one in Great Britain, though we don't know if they dated in high school.

Though to be fair George and Angelina is a whole other bag of fucked up-- and even if it isn't, it sounds like a terrible idea on paper o_o

I sort of see Hogwarts as like their university. There's not really any school after 7th year, just on-the-job training, so Hogwarts really is like their higher education. Their society teachers them that they're off into the real world at 17/18 year old, starting their careers. It wouldn't surprise me if most wizards and witches had a younger average age for marriage/having kids and so on.

I don't find George/Angelina to be problematic. Fred and Angelina just went to one dance together and were never even mentioned to be dating at any point. Even if they did date, it was short lived and not serious. So I don't think it's weird.

This. They don't go to university and rediscover themselves or whatever; they pretty much know what they want to do. So it makes sense that a lot of them would more or less know who they wanted to be with.

And it's not like high school sweethearts are that uncommon IRL. I know a lot of people - albeit not from the same school - who married high school sweethearts.

My idea for the TP sequel was a sort-of homage to the Snow Queen, where a villain has decided to piece the mirror back together shard by tiny shard, and that's the catalyst for the mirror reappearing in the world again. I wanted to write it into a fic but never got any more ideas besides that basic one.
