tomatoes!!!

[personal profile] shortysc22 2013-09-10 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
So it is tomato season where I live and I am learning how to make homemade tomato sauce for the first time! I'm using plum/roma tomatoes and I'm super excited!!

Congratulations, and good luck with the sauce! Fresh tomatoes are the best tomatoes.

thanks! All summer I eat tomato sandwiches because it's the only time I eat tomatoes like this.

Last week I had some fresh mozzarella and tomatoes and basil and it was perfect.

HECK YEAH! Fresh from the Farmer's Market tomatoes. Anyone who doesn't get excited about in season tomatoes has never had one. I am not a tomato person EXCEPT during this time. And then I am grabbing German Johnsons and Cherokee Purples to make the best BLTs of the year.

I'm so sad this year because we've had some bad weather and the purple cherokees haven't come in!!

I work at a farmer's market for a farmer who is a friend of my dad's so I actually don't pay for any of the vegetables. If you haven't had a Jersey tomato, those are the bestest ever!!

Yes, our tomatoes have finally ripened and I've been having a lot of BLTs!

It's the best part of summer. So many yummy varieties too.

My Sunsugar vines are still producing like crazy (I probably have another half pint to a pint on the vines right now), and I've got some Pineapples coming on right now. Can't wait for them to ripen!

Have you tried a Great White? I've one in the fridge from the farmer's market, and it looks so good.

I've never heard of a Great White. I'm actually pretty terrible with variety names, the only ones I know are Rutgers, Ramapo, beefsteak, Purple Cherokee, Brandywine, tomato berry garden and sweet 100s.

My favorite are the grape tomatoes though, I eat them like candy while I'm at the market working.

I've been trying to get my family to eat tomatoes other than reds, and they've gotten interested in my Yellow Boys, my Pineapples (they're pale yellow with green and red stripes and taste kinda sweet), the Cherokee Purples (Mom thinks its one of the better tomatoes she'd ever eaten), and my Sunsugars are cherry tomatoes that are ripe when they're orangey-gold. My favorite of the cherry tomatoes!

maybe the sunsugar are these yellow ones we have at the market this year. I'm a terrible employee that I don't know all of the produce we have, but I know what is yummy?

I'm happy to see so many other people love tomatoes too! Besides tomatoes, my absolute favorite thing is fresh corn. If the corn is fresh, you can actually eat it raw and it's soooooo good.

Re: tomatoes!!!

They could be. They're about the size of a Muscadine grape, and are a little sweeter (to me) than most cherry tomatoes. I know there's another yellow cherry tomato, but I can't remember what it's called! It has sun in the name, too, though.

My Mom and I usually have a bunch of different vines between our houses. This year, I wound up with four or five of the Sunsugars (one or two were volunteers), and the Pineapples, plus my Yellow Boys, and she has a Hillbilly, a Pineapple, a few Early Girls, and a weird volunteer that appears to be a cross between a Sunsugar and a Roma. :D I know we didn't buy it!

That's an awesome mix of tomatoes! I don't grow any at my house, simply because I can get everything either from the farm I work for or any one of the other farmers at the market.

If you're looking for a good red tomato variety, I love the ramapo tomato. It's a very red tomato and fairly flavorful.

Re: tomatoes!!!

[personal profile] hands4healing 2013-09-11 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
And I always try to get at least one or two new ones to try each year (this year it was the Hillbilly, which wound up at Mom's house). Which makes my family crazy, until they try what I get. :D

Ramapo? Is it good for canning, cooking or eating? We need some good canning tomatoes.

Here are some quick links about the Ramapo. I use it mostly for good sandwich tomatoes and as this is my first time making tomato sauce, I can't tell you if one variety is better than others. But the ramapo is a very tasty tomato and very red inside.

So lucky ;_; It's only JUST edged into spring here, so our tomatoes are still basically the hothouse variety, ie. crap. I can't wait until they're decent again!

In the mean time, have some recipes!

Heirloom tomato salad with pomegranate-sumac dressing, also known as the first thing I make when the really good heirlooms arrive.

Polenta and roasted cherry tomato tart.

The perfect tomato salad - we have caramelised balsamic vinegar now. NOTHING WILL BE SAFE.

Herbed sweet corn and tomato salad, although I'd personally omit the cheese.

Roasted garlic, olive, and tomato pasta salad - I've done this, and although I don't think we quite did the garlic right, the rest was deliiiicious. (Gotta work out how to veganise this, I love the combo!)

Cherry tomato, hummus, and olive tapenade flatbread pizza, which is actually the same flavour profile of my favourite sandwich (hummus on one slide of bread, tapenade on the other, tomato in between, for optional sweetness, add caramelised onions - or, when we had them, caramelised garlic. HNNGH BLISS).

I love tomatoes <3 Simple is good, too - just slice in half, tiiiiny sprinkle of salt (I have one called Herbamare, which is basically a herbed salt), and nom.

hell, at home we just chop tomatoes, red onions, and cucumbers, and dress them with olive oil and red wine vinegar and some oregano. feta cheese and kalamata olives on the side, and some good bread to sop up the juice.

Man, whenever I see someone so excited about something I dislike, I feel bad for hating it. XD I like tomato flavoured things (ketchup, pasta sauce etc), but I cannot stand raw tomato taste. To me it's a texture thing. D:

I grew up eating fresh tomatoes and it definitely makes a big difference.

I'm basically making homemade pasta sauce.
