Spoilers for episode 22 in comment!
(Anonymous) 2013-09-10 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)The thing about him is, he's stoic, not an asshole. He's very blunt, yeah, but that's because padding the truth/being soft while being in charge of a squadron in this particular situation is a total no-no.
**SPOILERS FOR EPISODE 22 OF SNK AHEAD**
They pretty much proved this point with what Dieter did. He let his heart take control of the situation and went back for Ivan's body, only to draw out more Titans and directly cause Levi to have to make the call to dump the bodies of the other soldiers. Levi had every chance and reason to be an asshole to Dieter after that (especially considering Petra was among the bodies lost), but instead he gave him the emblem patch, telling him it was Ivan's. When in fact it was Petra's and he'd kept it for himself. I'm sorry, but if you can still call Levi an asshole after that, then we have really different ideas about what constitutes an asshole.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-11 12:09 am (UTC)(link)NO IT IS NOT
Some of the later filler in one piece can be considered canon, but that's because Oda A: is pretty involved in that sometimes, and B: He specifically said the 2 year gap filler was taken from his notes of stuff he didn't have time to do in the comic but wanted to.
So we can't really put anime filler in and say it accurately reflects manga characterization.
If I'm wrong, do point me to source though, and I will do apology dance.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-11 12:26 am (UTC)(link)Only if you are discussing the anime characterization (nothing wrong with that, by the way). The anime is just an adaptation, the manga is the original one so it's the one that is canon. Just like no matter how many different versions of Wuthering Heights are out there, the canon one will always be the original book.
(You know, I'm just butthurt about people ignoring the manga canon because of the anime. Fuck everything, I want my blonde Petra and skinned Annie)

(Anonymous) 2013-09-11 12:25 am (UTC)(link)Yeah, but they used a screenshot from the anime, so I assumed that's what they were talking about.
