This is about the fourth secret moaning about how he shouldn't be so popular..

I have to say, the fandom's boner for him infected me. I don't know why. At least though, most of his fans also have no issue mocking the hell out of him, so there's not that annoying "How dare you even pretend to joke about making fun of him" aura in fandom that's made me hate some characters I used to kind of like.

Secret 10 - Shingeki no Kyojin, Attack on Titan

[Picture is Corporal Levi or Rivaille from the anime "Shingeki no Kyojin" or "Attack on Titan". He is a young man with pale skin and short dark hair. He is wearing a brown shirt, a gray tie or cloth and a green cape thing over that.]

I don't get what's so fucking great about him. He's a magnificent bastard? Whoop-de-flippin-ding.

It's like some weird Pavlovian response - media's paired "hot" with "asshole" long enough that all people need is a character to be an asshole for them to think he's hot.

It's the only logical explanation, because this dude is down-right funny-looking.

I don't know, I felt the same for a long time, but he's grown on me. Especially with this most recent episode. :(

The thing about him is, he's stoic, not an asshole. He's very blunt, yeah, but that's because padding the truth/being soft while being in charge of a squadron in this particular situation is a total no-no.

**SPOILERS FOR EPISODE 22 OF SNK AHEAD**

They pretty much proved this point with what Dieter did. He let his heart take control of the situation and went back for Ivan's body, only to draw out more Titans and directly cause Levi to have to make the call to dump the bodies of the other soldiers. Levi had every chance and reason to be an asshole to Dieter after that (especially considering Petra was among the bodies lost), but instead he gave him the emblem patch, telling him it was Ivan's. When in fact it was Petra's and he'd kept it for himself. I'm sorry, but if you can still call Levi an asshole after that, then we have really different ideas about what constitutes an asshole.

That whole "Levi is and asshole hottie" is something I've seen in fandom, but not really in canon tbh.

I'll admit, I was a little surprised at first to find that Levi was the most popular character with the fandom, but it doesn't really bother me. Levi's not my favorite but I enjoy him. And he's not really a magnificent bastard or an asshole anyway. He's actually shown to be a pretty decent guy underneath the stoic exterior and he's clearly affected by the loss of life around him. Heck, in his first appearance we even see him comforting a dying soldier! (And if anyone's the magnificent bastard in the Survey Corps, it's Erwin, who seems nicer but is a lot more ruthless.)

Random, but does anyone but me think Levi/Eren is pretty much 2003!FMA Roy/Ed 2.0? Not to say their characters are identical, but the way fandom plays on the dynamic and their respective roles in the series? Getting a blast from the past here.

He's the author's tribute to Rorschach from Watchmen. The characters are immensely popular for many similar reasons. Except Levi is better looking and also less of an asshole than Rorschach (I think he's blunt but not actually an asshole at all).

It's okay if you don't like him, but I don't see how you can call him an asshole. He might be cold and detached on the outside but he genuinely cares about his comrades. One of his best moments was when he told that dying soldier that his death would motivate him to keep fighting so that he could die in peace knowing his death was not in vain.

Part of the hype is because he can kill titans easily and stylishly whereas most trained soldiers (besides Mikasa) have trouble even doing that much. He's a badass in a series where people die easily. People love characters who can fight efficiently. Plus the fact he is a stoic character doesn't hurt, most people love the stoic type.

I thought he was okay looking until they kept showing Marco's corpse which looked exactly like him. Now he's just creepy.

Good job, anon, you got Levi's character wrong :D

The fact of the matter is: Levi's not an asshole. He's unapproachable and not all-smiles like some other characters, but that is because he used to be a thug. We still don't know anything about his past, but I can imagine it wasn't a walk in the park and coupled with his relatively small height (a fact we're being constantly made aware of), I'm pretty sure he had to become unapproachable and put up walls in order to gain respect and avoid being hurt and/or trampled over.

He still tries to look like nothing could ever hurt him, but he does care for the people around him. He just doesn't know how to show it or thinks that if he does show it, it's weakness (and that is probably, stemming from his past, something he avoids doing because it's "weak" and shit).

Levi is anything but an asshole. We don't have nearly enough information about him to judge him in any way. We just know what's being shown to us and he could have a very good reason for his behavior (aside from the one I mentioned).

Well, yes, he's not anything special when it comes to only looks, but I ADORE his personality. To me, he's more human than anyone in the series. And that combined with his age makes him hot to me. Though I can see where you're coming from.
