It's okay if you don't like him, but I don't see how you can call him an asshole. He might be cold and detached on the outside but he genuinely cares about his comrades. One of his best moments was when he told that dying soldier that his death would motivate him to keep fighting so that he could die in peace knowing his death was not in vain.

Part of the hype is because he can kill titans easily and stylishly whereas most trained soldiers (besides Mikasa) have trouble even doing that much. He's a badass in a series where people die easily. People love characters who can fight efficiently. Plus the fact he is a stoic character doesn't hurt, most people love the stoic type.
