I think he's funny.

That whole "Levi is and asshole hottie" is something I've seen in fandom, but not really in canon tbh.

I always wonder why he's portrayed as someone who constantly beats others - especially Eren - up... and I just wonder how they got that? I mean, he's not a fluffy character by all means, but he's not brutal/violent when he doesn't need to be (except when it comes to Titans, but I'm inclined to give him a pass there)?

I think it's part of fandom's tendency to latch on to one single moment and run with it. He beats up Eren at the trial for reasons that make perfect sense in context and somehow certain parts of fandom take that to mean "Levi constantly beats Eren senseless!"

Same reason Sasha is still "potato girl" even after she faced a titan all alone unarmed to save a kid.

I'm pretty sure it's shipping related, like some fans NEED him to be the asshole seme/troubled but cute stereotype. A lot of people thought the beating scene was either funny or hot. Which ok I won't shame you for liking it, but that doesn't mean Levi (or Eren) enjoyed it or did it for the lulz.

Hot asshole doesn't really fit Levi. He's not hot, and he's not even that much of an asshole. I mean, when he beat the shit out of Eren, it was pure necessity and he even sort of apologized after. He just seems like a sort of OCD guy who has to make tough decisions, and as a commander doesn't really buddy up with everyone.
