Until you can see a dentist, I suggest you treat the wound like you just had a tooth extracted: Frequent warm salt water rinses (especially after eating) and don't poke at it too much (even with your tongue). Do not use alcohol-based rinses, as that can be bad for an open wound. Take ibuprofen if the pain gets worse. At least that's what the dentist has always told me. Good luck.

wait, salt water? i thought getting salt into wounds was dangerous because it can enter the bloodstream and form clots?

DA

Never heard of that, and I've used saline rinses for various mouth-related issues for decades, have not had any problems of that nature. Works way better than OTC chemicals, IME, OP, for both pain and healing. (The swelling should go down noticeably after one rinse.)

...I am also uncertain how salt in the bloodstream could form clots. exactly. Given that the bulk of one's blood plasma (the bit that isn't red or white blood cells) essentially is saline...

well now I'm finding, with one exception, that it's not true? weird. I've always heard it as a bit of popular wisdom (although I've heard the exact opposite like in this thread too, about soaking wounds on saltwater)

well damn now I'm confused!

Da

When anon says salt water, they mean like a teaspoon of salt per cup of water. Saline rinses aren't supposed to be very salty at all.

Anon from above: Yes, that's what I meant, thank you. A spoonful of table salt in warm water, gently swish in the mouth, and spit, to keep the wound clear of infection-causing debris. And it's definitely not dangerous! The worst it'll do is nothing.

Nope. Salt-water rinses are good for any mouth wound or canker sore. Warm water, dissolved salt = all good. It's a little stingy (though not nearly as bad as alcohol) but is very soothing in the long run, and keeps everything clean.
