I won't say anything except that this differs from what a lot of alcoholics think.

No, that's fine. You can go further if you like. I admit I'm not speaking out of experience here. I'm not an alcoholic. I drink maybe once a year, if I don't forget. The only thing I'm actually addicted to is caffeine, which basically makes me one of 350 million Americans. I'm not trying to be an expert. My feeling, as not-an-expert though, is just that, at some point, you win. Even if you have to continue--for the rest of your life--to have a specific attitude towards alcohol, that doesn't mean that you don't or can't have a legit accomplishment. I guess I just don't believe in unwinnable battles.

The thing is that having to have a specific attitude towards alcohol is the thing that makes you an alcoholic. The reason someone is called an alcoholic is because they have a problem with alcohol that they can't control, and that they're never going to be able to control, and you don't learn to control it no matter how long you go. That's why people say you're never cured of being an alcoholic. The fact that you're drinking isn't the thing that makes you an alcoholic. The fact that you have to have a specific attitude towards alcohol is.

It's true that you can have a sense of accomplishment and victory - and I think that does exist for a lot of alcoholics, and it's something that is contained within a lot of 12 step programs and the like. But the sense of accomplishment comes from just staying clean - from not drinking. That's difficult enough to get a sense of accomplishment. The drinking, that's something you can change, and that's something you can have a sense of accomplishment about. And you should, because it's absolutely an accomplishment. But the thing that makes you an alcoholic, that's not something you can change, it's not something you can win.

Just some thoughts, I guess (For reference, I'm not an alcoholic either, but I'm certainly what you might call at risk, and I do know a lot of alcoholics)
