I agree, he was a douche, and I'm really glad about what he said, anyway

I mean, I'll say right now that I think that what he said was kind of a dick move, and very dismissive not of fandom or fanfiction but of the fans and the legacy of the franchise. But...

There are certain friends of mine who I occasionally wish to hit over the head with the books they love until they understand that no, not everyone in the world is involved in fandom, not everyone spends time in fandom, not everyone understands fanfiction, even if more people today know what it is than perhaps even a few years before.

Yes, few specific irritating friends of mine, there are probably plenty of people around us who are into fanfiction, too, and just like to keep it quiet. You know why they keep it quiet? You, and people like you, who can't seem to understand that believe it or not, not everyone is interested in hearing about this great interspecies sex pollen mpreg fic you just read.

But there are plenty of people like that when it comes to hobbies. People who will bore you over their interest in stamp collecting or football or whatever their hobby might, but it isn't a requirement that just because other people aren't interested in it they should be embarrassed for liking it.

This. I am deeply disinterested in having someone talk at me about baseball, or gardening, or how drunk/high they got this weekend. People should restrict talking about their hobbies to audiences who they have reason to believe will be interested. That doesn't mean some hobbies are inherently shameful and others aren't, unless the hobby in question is harmful to someone.

I do agree that people really should restrict their hobby conversations to those who are interested in said hobby. Nothing bores me more than a looooong conversation about football or cars.

With that being said, some hobbies are more acceptable to discuss than others. If you write hardcore slash fanfiction, that's perfectly fine. But discussing it in public or in front of strangers isn't really acceptable. And sadly, I've known people who don't seem to understand why the average person doesn't want to hear about their latest Sam's-dog-fucks-Dean fanfiction, or why they think Spock is secretly begging for Kirk's cock in his ass.

I thought his words, in the context of a question about RPS, were an extremely mild snub, and I certainly don't feel dismissed as someone who's been a Trekkie since that boy was in diapers.

We might be looking at different comments, then? The ones I saw basically said that he has better things to do than fanfiction and implies that anyone else who does has nothing better to do. *shrugs* Mildly dismissive but still dismissive...just no more so than the rest of the general population.

This hardly matters, but I feel like pointing out that Zachary Quinto is closer to 40 than 30. He's just got a baby face.

His birth year is 1977, which is about the time I started watching Trek on syndication.
