Too true, although his bitchiness also had a touch of the elitist about it - as in my life as a relatively wealthy, jet setting actor mixing with fabulous people is a megaton better than your lowly, lonely, freakish existence.

Likewise. I saw plenty of people saying how he shouldn't have commented and how it was offensive and biting the fans' hand and whatnot. Uh, no. He has a right to not like it/not be interested and to say it. Maybe this will serve as a reminder that not all actors care about your fanfic and they don't want to humor you, just like most of the general population.

Then again, I'm one of those people that liked it better when there still was some distance between the fans and the creators.

Okay, I agree that fanfic is weird to people not in fandom. Sometimes I remember the fic I have read and enjoyed... and written... and think "wow. That is REALLY weird." but honestly I don't think actors (or writers/directors/etc) should make negative comments about fanworks created about the projects they work on. Even if they really mean it. The people who create fanworks are the hardcore fans, the ones who love you the most and who will be most injured by your negative opinion. Why be cruel to them, just so that you can look cool and "above" all that geeky fannish nonsense?

It might be weird, but it's done out of love. You don't have to embrace it, but you don't have to insult it, either.

*eta: I haven't actually read his comments; I'm looking them up now. If fanfic was forced down his throat that is one thing, but if it was just a general "what do you think of fanfic?" type question, he could have gone with "no comment".

The prevalence of fanfiction and fandom in recent years has really creeped me out, tbh.

Its fine as a hobby, but I hate how it has affected certain canon shows (I'm looking at you, Supernatural) and it's creepy that there are fans at cons who ask the actors about slash.

It's just....ick. Why would you even think that's acceptable behavior? D:

Secret 2 - Zachary Quinto, Fanfiction

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-09-11 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
[Picture is actor Zachary Quinto. He has light olive skin and short dark hair. He is wearing eyeglasses with thick legs and he is talking into a microphone as he sits being interviewed. He is wearing a short-sleeved blue shirt, denim pants and thin suspenders.]

I loved his dismissive comments about fanfiction. He sounded like a douche, but I loved it because it was a reminder to fandom that most people not involved in it find it REALLY FUCKING WEIRD.

I feel like people recently have been forgetting that fantasizing about Will getting pregnant with Hannibal's babies ISN'T a hobby as socially acceptable as playing squash or bike riding and it's killing me with second hand embarrassment.

You can be embarrassed all you want, but we don't all have to be. (Not that bringing RPF up to actors isn't so incredibly fucking stupidly awkward - I haven't even read what he said about it because I know I'll cringe - but I've never written RPF so I don't feel the need to put any effort into defending it.)

Well, I think it depends on the fic. I mean, fanfiction has existed since the beginning of literature. Some months ago I read a book written by E.L.James where the main characters were Darcy and Elizabeth. Last month I read a book about a young Sherlock Holmes. I bet those authors don't feel embarrassed; why should I?

I agree, he was a douche, and I'm really glad about what he said, anyway

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-09-11 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, I'll say right now that I think that what he said was kind of a dick move, and very dismissive not of fandom or fanfiction but of the fans and the legacy of the franchise. But...

There are certain friends of mine who I occasionally wish to hit over the head with the books they love until they understand that no, not everyone in the world is involved in fandom, not everyone spends time in fandom, not everyone understands fanfiction, even if more people today know what it is than perhaps even a few years before.

Yes, few specific irritating friends of mine, there are probably plenty of people around us who are into fanfiction, too, and just like to keep it quiet. You know why they keep it quiet? You, and people like you, who can't seem to understand that believe it or not, not everyone is interested in hearing about this great interspecies sex pollen mpreg fic you just read.

Agreed, I like fanfiction and I enjoy reading it but man I am never going to pretend that it isn't an odd hobby.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-11 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Fanfiction doesn't have to be about porn.

*sigh* I'm so sick of authors talking about fanfiction as if it's nothing but badly written porn all the time.

Also I don't see how fanfiction should be socially unacceptable if you don't act like a fanatic twit about it. Don't go into too much detail. Don't describe everything or describe the canon too much or go on a rant about your ship and why it's better. Sure it can be embarrassing if described or stereotyped as "teens writing bad porn".

I have a neighbor -an older neighbor- who knows I write fanfiction. I simply explained it as writing stories based on things I liked. She thought it was impressive that I did so much writing in my free time. I wasn't the least bit embarrassed. Why should I be embarrassed?

I just write a whole lot.

Hell even if someone DOES write porny fanficton. If they don't advertise explicitly everything they write who cares?

What's actually worthy of being embarrassed about is being fanatic about your interests and pressing them onto other people, and never shutting up about it and going into detail that people don't care to talk about.

and let's face it you can just as easily do that as a writer of original fiction. "So I have this novel" ", that reminds me of my novel..." "Have i told you about my novel...""you HAVE to hear about my novel...."

The answer is not telling people "your hobby is bad and you should feel ashamed." Writing isn't less of an "acceptable" hobby than biking or football. I don't see how sneering about someone's pasttime or reminding people they should be embarrassed is a positive thing.

This secret reminds me of those passive aggresive "friendly reminders" on tumblr. "Friendly reminder that your hobby is not socially acceptable and people think you're weird"

I mean perhaps we should be aware of negative views of it that people hold, only so we can prove those perceptions wrong by trying to be professional about it and prove to authors that they don't have to be be as upset about the thought of their works being written about by us. Show them that we're not some kind of strange weirdos but just people who like to write.

I mean geez are we going to be wimps about this? "People see your hobby as weird. So be embarrassed and hide it from everyone." Or are we going to stand up and be adults about it " People find your hobby weird....so challenge the stereotype!"

(also note: There's nothing wrong with writing porn and I'm not saying those who write it are weirdos. People write erotica in real life that's cool. They just don't act like the fact that they write erotica is a dinner or party conversation.)

For me, I feel it depends on the type of fic? Like, if it's RPF or porn I get embarrassed about people seeing that as an everyday kind of activity. But something like a gen friendship fic? Eh, not really.

I don't know any of this guy's comments though. So I can't say whether I agree with him or not.

But, eh, I get having second hand embarrassment and here's the thing. The thing is, people are never going to stop thinking all kinds of fic are completely average and everyday things. There have always been those people who hand their 50+ chapter porn RPF fic to the actors. There always will be those people too. Your best way to deal with it, at least the way to make you the least uncomfortable, is to try and ignore it and/or remove yourself from places where this is the norm.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-11 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly I don't understand how he could be so actively supportive of Sylinder in his Heroes days and not of Kirk/Spock, which has been around for decades and whose fans are currently making his flop movie of a fanfic the moneymaking success it is.

ugh i was there in person when the fanfiction thing came up at fan expo, the whole thing was so embarrassing that i wanted to find the girl who asked the question and clobber her. can't really fault him for what he said there because from an outsider's pov i know it's weird as fuck. so i put the blame on the person who brought it up.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-12 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
But why should people be embarrassed or ashamed about enjoying fandom or fanfiction and talking about it? Is it because fanfiction is predominantly associated with the idea of female fantasies? I mean I understand to a degree when you start delving into the actual personal lives of real people why it might start to feel uncomfortable, but I'm not sure I get the horror of people knowing that for some writing fan fiction based on fictional characters is a hobby.
