Fanfiction doesn't have to be about porn.

*sigh* I'm so sick of authors talking about fanfiction as if it's nothing but badly written porn all the time.

Also I don't see how fanfiction should be socially unacceptable if you don't act like a fanatic twit about it. Don't go into too much detail. Don't describe everything or describe the canon too much or go on a rant about your ship and why it's better. Sure it can be embarrassing if described or stereotyped as "teens writing bad porn".

I have a neighbor -an older neighbor- who knows I write fanfiction. I simply explained it as writing stories based on things I liked. She thought it was impressive that I did so much writing in my free time. I wasn't the least bit embarrassed. Why should I be embarrassed?

I just write a whole lot.

Hell even if someone DOES write porny fanficton. If they don't advertise explicitly everything they write who cares?

What's actually worthy of being embarrassed about is being fanatic about your interests and pressing them onto other people, and never shutting up about it and going into detail that people don't care to talk about.

and let's face it you can just as easily do that as a writer of original fiction. "So I have this novel" ", that reminds me of my novel..." "Have i told you about my novel...""you HAVE to hear about my novel...."

The answer is not telling people "your hobby is bad and you should feel ashamed." Writing isn't less of an "acceptable" hobby than biking or football. I don't see how sneering about someone's pasttime or reminding people they should be embarrassed is a positive thing.

This secret reminds me of those passive aggresive "friendly reminders" on tumblr. "Friendly reminder that your hobby is not socially acceptable and people think you're weird"

I mean perhaps we should be aware of negative views of it that people hold, only so we can prove those perceptions wrong by trying to be professional about it and prove to authors that they don't have to be be as upset about the thought of their works being written about by us. Show them that we're not some kind of strange weirdos but just people who like to write.

I mean geez are we going to be wimps about this? "People see your hobby as weird. So be embarrassed and hide it from everyone." Or are we going to stand up and be adults about it " People find your hobby weird....so challenge the stereotype!"

(also note: There's nothing wrong with writing porn and I'm not saying those who write it are weirdos. People write erotica in real life that's cool. They just don't act like the fact that they write erotica is a dinner or party conversation.)

as an addendum:

FOR HE LOVE OF GOD DON'T PUSH YOUR FANFIC /SHIP ON THE SHOW ACTORS AND STUFF.

YES

THAT SHIT IS SOCIALLY UNACCEPTABLE.

I mean if it's requesting a VA at an event to say lines if he's open to it (even then within reason) but harassing is not okay.

so why did you write WORDS AND WORDS AND WORDS if you agree with Quinto's position?

because I was responding to the OP who it seemed like they were making a statement about fanfiction AS A WHOLE and not just "creepy behavior about your own slash ship".

Fanfiction=/= obsessive fuckwits shoving their porn in an actor's face

I have written fanfic as a hobby for ten years. I have yet to ask an actor in one of my shows about my ships or try to force my fanfic on him. I wouldn't do that if I met one because it is creepy. I would not harass an author about it.

I was responding to the OP acting like fanfiction and obsessive fannish behavior went hand in hand. They do not. The OP made a connection I didn't agree with.
