Honestly I don't understand how he could be so actively supportive of Sylinder in his Heroes days and not of Kirk/Spock, which has been around for decades and whose fans are currently making his flop movie of a fanfic the moneymaking success it is.

I think it's because he was starting to become well-known back then, and even at its peak, Heroes wasn't as popular as Star Trek has always been. Maybe when he was in Heroes, he was in a honeymoon stage with fandom and more enthusiastic about engaging with it then? Maybe more nu!K/S shippers overlap with RPS shippers, so maybe more of them waved their fic in his face or asked him about it?

Or who knows, maybe he shipped Mohinder/Sylar and doesn't ship Kirk/Spock.

I find it so uncanny how he didn't object to Mylar/Sylinder at all. I remember being a huge Mohinder/Sylar fan when Heroes was just starting and ZQ was the one who actually brought it up during a con. They asked each of the cast what was their favorite part about season 1 and he said, "One word. Sylinder." And everybody was screaming.

But I think you're probably right. I think it's the RPS with Chris Pine that's getting him all riled up, and understandably so. :(

Oh yeah, I shipped Mohinder/Sylar, too! LOL, that was a great summer, though it ended up being the high point of snowballing into NOPE. But yeah, there was lots of speculation, fic, news, and fun things like ZQ saying "Sylinder" at CC and pitching "Sylinder: The Sitcom" with Sendhil, it was awesome! And I thought it was hilarious when someone in the fandom posted pictures of Sendhil and Greg laughing and fake kissing, then cut to ZQ looking jealous.

Yeah, unfortunately, it's probably the amount of RPS and RPS-related stuff ZQ's most likely been shown, and as cbrachyrhynchos said, people change.

People's opinions can change over the course of a few years.

in this particular case, I really think it has a lot to do with the fact that Quinto is now open about his sexuality. disgustingly enough, I still see this creepy and fetishistic attitude among (mostly het) fandom members who assume that the only reason someone would hate their precious ficcies is if they are a homophobe so if the actor or creator is openly queer, they assume they will automatically be on board with their fandom stuff. it's late so idk if I'm expressing myself properly but there's this creepy 'so you're queer so you must ship this so let me talk at you about it' that I see so much at cons and I am really upset by it

A lot of those fans who are 'currently making his flop movie of a fanfic the moneymaking success it is' don't all right fanfiction or ship K/S. There's also a lot of Star Trek fans who aren't even Trekkies (my dad and aunt both love all the Star Treks, but think cons, buying merchandise and whatnot is dumb). And the fact of the matter is, people will go see a movie that has hot actors, explosions and SFX regardless of how bad or good it is. The idea that 'the fans' have the power to sink or float a summer popcorn flick it a really silly, cringe-worthy idea.

I'd guess it's more the Pinto craziness than anything else. Who knows what kind of crap he and Chris get thrown in their faces, or indeed what kind of crap is ex used to get?

Poor Groff. I wonder why they broke up?

(Anonymous) 2013-09-12 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
I think they were rarely in the same place for very long, for one thing.

what's the matter about it being there for decades? You know he's working as Spock in the reboot where his character does have a girlfriend. Do people really expect him to say that he likes spirk and that Spock is gay for the captain all the while he's in a relationship with Uhura?
So K/S is "old" then he's not allowed to have opinions.

"and whose fans are currently making his flop movie of a fanfic the moneymaking success it is."

yeah, paramount has to thank the spirk fans if the last movie was a success... what the star trek franchise would be without them...

My tin hat tells me its because him and Chris Pine are banging and the question hit too close to home~

But seriously, perhaps more to do with the fact that he is out now and wasn't then.

That being said his initial response was (typically) douchey. If he was initially asked about RPF and that was his response I'd 100% support him, but he wasn't. I love/hate Quinto...he's such a pretentious douche and his comment was so judgey/smug.
