I've read, collected, and enjoyed doujinshi for years now, and while there are still some great artists and storytellers involved out there, one naggingly specific thing is killing the enjoyment for me:

The crymaxing.

Seriously? Grown ass adults start bawling every time they have sex? It bothered me less when I was in mostly Japanese fandoms, and Japan has entirely different social conventions when it comes to what acceptable/expected behaviour when getting laid, but now that I'm mostly reading doujinshi for Western fandoms, it yanks me right out of the story. Really? Spock, or Aragorn, or Steve Rogers are just going to sob every time they have a dick in their ass/get sucked off? I may not have pegged a dude yet but I have given some blow jobs in my day and not a single one of the recipients cried. Am I just doin' it wrong?

wait are you telling me porn is different from real sex

(Anonymous) 2013-09-12 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yes yes porn is a fantasy. But what is super sexy about crying?

(Anonymous) 2013-09-12 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
What's super sexy about anything? We all like different stuff.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-12 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
But if that's true, why are they crying in every single doujinshi?

If "we all like different stuff" shouldn't there be some people as turned off by it as I am?

(Anonymous) 2013-09-12 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know I'm sorry!! The writers of those doujins probably noticed that it was really popular and was selling books so it became a staple of the trade. But I think even if I were a mind reader I am too far away from Japan to get a good signal so I can't really be sure.

There are a lot of things that exist and a lot of people who buy those things and I'm sure there are just as many people who don't because they think it looks dumb. I guess my question for you would be if you hate it so much why do you keep buying it?

(Anonymous) 2013-09-12 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
I keep buying it because the art is excellent and I like the stories, like I said. But the crying is just grating on me more and more with each one I read. Okay, so some people like it. Fine! We all have our kinks and preferences. It's the fact that it's there every single time, ughhh...

(Anonymous) 2013-09-12 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
signifier of intense emotional feeling, maybe?

(Anonymous) 2013-09-12 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
From getting a blowjob? From someone they aren't even in a relationship with?

(Anonymous) 2013-09-12 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not saying it's, like, a naturalistic depiction of real human experience or anything

i'm just saying maybe that's why people like it to be there

(Anonymous) 2013-09-12 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
no, doujinshi is just a weird thing resulting from other weird things, you are okay

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2013-09-12 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Everytime? No. Sometimes, with some people? Yes.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-12 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Comparing your sex life to porn? Yeah, you're doing it wrong.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-12 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
Lmao, crymaxing, yes, I'll be remembering that one. I dunno, there seems to be an excess of grown adults bursting into tears at the slightest emotion in fandom in general, and orgasm is just one of said emotions. It's always struck me as awkward and weird and usually shunts me out of a story when it doesn't fit my idea of a character (seriously, Spock? really?), but I figure it's a YMMV kind of thing. A lot of people get twitterpated over crying men, I guess.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-12 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I guess that's true. That's probably the reason. Just weird to me that so many people would love it so much that it's everywhere when I can't stand it >_> If some guy started sobbing in the middle of sex I'd stop immediately and ask him if he was okay, yet nobody ever seems to do that in doujinshi either - are they just jerks?
pantswarrior: Laguna scratches his head. (huh?)

Semi-related - I remember hearing a story from a friend in Japan of another Western friend who was also there (I think for JET), and acquired a Japanese girlfriend. So the relationship progressed, and the time seemed right, so they went to have sex, and when it started, she started crying and moaning things like "No, stop, stop!" So you know, not being a horrible person, the dude did stop at once and started to ask if she was okay. And she was like "Why did you stop?" And he was all "...........WTF" (which is why he wound up talking to other people about details of his sex life - he was seriously weirded out).

So it also might be some kind of gendered expectation thing in Japanese culture, and we know how some types of yaoi fans are REALLY into making one character the girl...

(Anonymous) 2013-09-12 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I get the strong impression that it's a cultural thing, but... ...well these aren't Japanese guys, in the comics. They wouldn't have been socialized that way. Even if one of them was to try to play "the woman" he'd be making loud porn star-esque noises and raving about how much he wanted the other guy's cock.

(Anonymous) 2013-09-12 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
...And? Western fandoms make characters that aren't from the west act in ways that are, frankly, distinctly western all the time. *That* is just something fandoms tend to do in general.
