"Oh by the way" BTS/After the Fact Canon

(Anonymous) 2013-09-13 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
If a creator says something about their characters but doesn't include it in the canon, I don't consider it part of canon. I don't care if other people do, but I hate that I'm expected to. If it isn't in the canon, then it isn't canon. Rowling can say what she wants about Dumbledore and Joss could give a panel about Angel and Spike's "deviant" sexual relationship, but that doesn't make those things canon. You know what does? Including it in the canon!

Deviant?

I don't know the quote, but considering what all of Angelus's other relationships were like...

Yes? Are you unfamiliar with the scenario at hand or are you objecting the word use?

If it's the former, Whedon said (and an episode heavily implied) that Spike and Angel were totally doing it in the 1800s.

If it's the latter: You may be offended, but it's an apt word. Because to be deviant is to deviate from the norm. It's not based on a judgment, it's based on a statistic.

It's the exact word Whedon used when he said they'd had a sexual relationship.

I absolutely agree.

(unless Word of God canon happens to be my headcanon, too.)

I completely agree with you. Like, on every particular here. It's the author's job to tell the audience what they need to know about the work in the work. Either your stuff speaks for itself or it doesn't.
