Telepaths in dystopias

(Anonymous) 2013-09-13 03:28 pm (UTC)(link)
One fandom AU scenario (also fictional scenario) I've got really fed up with is the one of telepaths ostracized by the oh-so-mean Mundanes and persecuted by a dystopian regime. Because (a) it's not unreasonable for people without ESP to feel about as kindly toward telepaths as Americans do right now toward the NSA--it would be hellish to live in close proximity to someone from whom you could have no privacy, and (b) in a dystopia, it would make more sense for the regime to use telepaths as an arm of the secret police than to make them its victims. It's just as likely that telepaths would be the pampered darlings of the regime, if not its ruling elite.

...Honestly, it makes as much sense - unless there's some reasons historically for the regime to be against doing that...like say a prior revolt lead by telepaths. But that never seems to be the case in those kinds of stories. : /

Unless the telepath is using their powers to help the resistance. Etta in Fringe S5 comes to mind; her powers being particularly useful because the dystopian oppressors are telepathic might-as-well-be-aliens.

OP

Yeah, this is a good point--the telepaths don't have to be a monolithic group. I guess I'm just a little tired of the "poor oppressed people with superpowers" trope.

What are you even talking about? I can't even think of one fictional example of this. I'm sure there's some, but you're acting like it's everywhere.
